Sebuah studi menyebutkan membersihkan lidah secara teratur dapat mengurangi bakteri mulut yang tidak diinginkan yang dapat menyebabkan bau mulut, penumpukan plak dan masalah kesehatan mulut lainnya.

Saat ini, ada beberapa cara membersihkan lidah yang bisa Anda terapkan. Mulai dari menggunakan sikat gigi, obat kumur dan alat pengikis lidah khusus, Anda bisa memilih metode mana yang paling nyaman untuk dilakukan secara rutin.

Metode yang dianjurkan untuk membersihkan lidah antara lain:

 

1. Menggunakan Pembersih Khusus Lidah

Alat pembersih khusus lidah atau tongue cleaner adalah alat yang dirancang khusus untuk membersihkan lidah dan mengangkat bakteri serta sisa makanan yang menempel di lidah.

Alat ini terdiri dari berbagai macam jenis, terbuat dari bahan plastik maupun logam yang memiliki gagang dan area yang berlubang untuk membersihkan lidah.

Cara menggunakan alat ini sangat mudah, Anda hanya perlu menjulurkan lidah keluar lalu menempelkan alat pembersih tersebut di area lidah bagian dalam. Lalu, tekan alat dan gerakkan ke depan. Usai membersihkan lidah, berkumurlah dengan air hangat untuk menyingkirkan kotoran dan bakteri.

 

2. Menggunakan Sikat Gigi

Jika tidak ingin menggunakan alat pembersih lidah, Anda dapat menggunakan sikat gigi yang biasa Anda gunakan sehari-hari untuk membersihkan lidah. Biasanya, membersihkan lidah dengan sikat gigi akan lebih mudah dilakukan karena Anda dapat melakukannya setelah menyikat gigi tanpa menggunakan peralatan lain.

Meskipun praktis, namun Anda perlu berhati-hati saat menggunakan sikat gigi sebagai pembersih lidah. Pasalnya, biasanya kebiasaan menyikat gigi ini dilakukan terlalu keras atau terlalu dalam. Jika terlalu dalam, hal ini dapat membuat Anda muntah atau terluka.

 

3. Berkumur Air Garam

Berkumur air garam dapat membantu Anda membersihkan lidah dengan lebih baik. Caranya, isi gelas dengan air hangat lalu masukkan setengah sendok teh garam ke dalamnya, lalu gunakan cairan tersebut untuk berkumur. Berkumur air garam dapat membantu membersihkan rongga mulut sehingga menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri. 

Meskipun praktis, namun cara ini dianggap kurang efektif jika dilakukan sendirian tanpa pembersihan lidah secara mekanik menggunakan sikat gigi atau membersihkan gigi dengan pembersih lidah.
