Selain tulang, gigi merupakan bagian tubuh paling keras yang tersusun dari beberapa lapisan. Lapisan paling atas disebut dengan email. Email gigi sebagian besar terbuat dari kalsium fosfat, sebuah mineral yang sekeras batu. Di lapisan berikutnya ada dentin, pulpa, sementum dan ligamen periodontal. 

Gigi dapat mengalami kerusakan yang terjadi akibat kerusakan pada email gigi. Kerusakan gigi jika dibiarkan dapat merusak lapisan gigi lebih dalam dan berkembang menjadi gigi berlubang. 

 

Penyebab Kerusakan Gigi 

Kerusakan gigi dapat terjadi akibat adanya penumpukan plak di gigi. Plak adalah lapisan lengket yang terbentuk akibat bakteri bercampur dengan makanan dan air liur.

Ketika mengonsumsi makanan yang mengandung gula atau tepung, bakteri pada plak akan menghasilkan zat asam yang dapat merusak email gigi. Lama-kelamaan, gigi dapat mengalami kerusakan dan menyebabkan gigi berlubang. 

Risiko kerusakan gigi dapat meningkat, jika:

  • Mengalami mulut kering
  • Memiliki email gigi yang lemah akibat kondisi medis tertentu atau keturunan (genetik)
  • Tidak menggosok gigi 2 kali sehari menggunakan pasta gigi berfluoride 
  • Memiliki masalah makan, seperti anoreksia atau bulimia
  • Mengalami refluks asam lambung (GERD) 

 

Waspadai Makanan yang Dapat Menyebabkan Kerusakan Gigi 

Seperti disebutkan sebelumnya bahwa kerusakan gigi dipicu oleh penumpukan plak. Sedangkan plak terbentuk dari sisa-sisa makanan yang tidak dibersihkan dengan baik. Ada beberapa makanan yang berisiko menyebabkan penumpukan plak, antara lain: 

Permen Asam 

Tidak hanya permen manis, permen asam juga dapat menyebabkan kerusakan pada gigi. Permen asam selain mengandung gula juga mengandung lebih banyak asam yang dapat memengaruhi lapisan gigi.

Karena permen bersifat kenyal, maka ia akan menempel di gigi untuk waktu yang lebih lama sehingga lebih berpeluang menyebabkan kerusakan gigi. 

Roti 

Roti merupakan salah satu sumber karbohidrat yang mengandung pati. Saat Anda mengunyah roti, air liur dapat memecah pati menjadi gula. Gula dapat merusak gigi yang apabila tidak dibersihkan. 

Selain itu, serpihan roti seringkali terselip di gigi dan menempel di celah antara gigi, yang dapat menyebabkan gigi berlubang. Untuk mencegah kerusakan gigi akibat konsumsi roti, Anda dapat memilih roti yang terbuat dari gandum utuh. Roti dari gandum utuh memiliki kandungan gula lebih sedikit. 

Alkohol

Anda tentunya sudah tahu alkohol buruk bagi kesehatan. Namun, tahukah Anda bahwa mengonsumsi alkohol juga dapat memicu terjadinya mulut kering?. Mulut kering terjadi akibat kurangnya produksi air liur. 

Air liur membantu mencegah sisa makanan menempel di gigi dan membersihkan sisa makanan di mulut. Selain itu, air liur dapat membantu memperbaiki tanda awal kerusakan gigi, penyakit gusi, dan infeksi mulut lainnya. Untuk mencegah mulut kering, Anda dapat memperbanyak minum air.

Keripik Kentang

Snack renyah ini sepertinya telah menjadi dambaan banyak orang untuk memuaskan dan menemani di berbagai suasana. Namun, keripik kentang mengandung banyak pati.

Pati dapat dipecah menjadi gula yang menjadi bahan makanan bakteri yang terkandung di plak gigi. Bakteri dapat menghasilkan zat asam yang dapat merusak gigi. 

Buah kering 

Memang benar bila buah kering adalah camilan yang sehat. Namun bagaimanapun, buah kering meninggalkan rasa lengket di gigi yang dapat menyebabkannya mudah menempel di gigi dan celah-celah gigi. Agar tetap bisa mendapatkan manfaatnya, sebaiknya segera berkumur setelah makan buah kering, atau kembali ke versi buah segarnya saja. 

 

Selain makanan di atas, minum minuman manis juga dapat meningkatkan risiko kerusakan gigi, misalnya minuman bersoda, es krim, jus buah dalam kemasan. Untuk mencegah kerusakan gigi, Anda bisa berkumur setiap sesudah makan atau minum, menggosok gigi dengan pasta gigi berfluoride, dan mengunjungi dokter gigi setidaknya setiap 6 bulan sekali.
