Garam epsom juga dikenal sebagai magnesium sulfat. Garam ini merupakan senyawa yang terbuat dari magnesium, sulfur dan oksigen. Karena kandungan mineral yang tinggi, garam ini banyak digunakan untuk mencukupi kebutuhan mineral dengan cara dilarutkan ke air sebagai campuran air untuk berendam.

1. Sumber Magnesium

Magnesium adalah salah satu mineral yang dibutuhkan tubuh, namun masih banyak orang yang kekurangan magnesium dalam tubuhnya. Meskipun magnesium sulfat yang terkandung dalam garam epsom bisa menjadi sumber magnesium, namun karena rasanya yang pahit garam epsom tidak dikonsumsi secara diminum.

Sebuah penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa orang yang berendam menggunakan garam epsom memiliki kadar magnesium yang lebih tinggi. Untuk itu, banyak orang yang berendam garam epsom sebagai cara memenuhi kebutuhan magnesium. Meskipun demikian, masih dibutuhkan penelitian lebih lanjut mengenai manfaat berendam dengan pemenuhan magnesium dalam tubuh.

 

2. Meredakan stres dan membantu tidur lebih nyenyak

Kadar magnesium yang tinggi diketahui dapat membantu mengurangi stres dan membuat tidur lebih nyenyak. Magnesium membantu otak menghasilkan neurotransmiter yang membantu tidur lebih nyenyak dan mengurangi stres. Kecukupan kadar magnesium dalam tubuh dapat membantu mengurangi penumpukan asam laktat di otot yang menyebabkan nyeri otot setelah olahraga. Karenanya, bagi Anda yang mengalami nyeri otot dan kram setelah olahraga dianjurkan untuk berendam dalam air panas yang sudah dilarutkan garam epsom.

Bagi atlet yang memiliki kadar magnesium rendah, dianjurkan untuk mengonsumsi suplemen magnesium untuk memastikan memiliki kadar magnesium yang memadai.
