Sleeping beauty syndrome adalah kelainan langka yang menyebabkan seseorang tidur dalam jangka waktu yang sangat lama. Kondisi ini membuat seseorang yang mengalaminya tidak bisa tetap terjaga di siang hari. Ketahui lebih lanjut apa itu sleeping beauty syndrome dan apa penyebab kelainan tidur ini.

 

Apa itu Sleeping Beauty Syndrome

Sleeping beauty syndrome dalam dunia medis disebut dengan sindrom Kleine-Levin (KLS). Sindrom ini termasuk dalam jenis hipersomnia berulang, di mana seseorang yang mengalaminya tidur dalam waktu yang berlebihan, yaitu antara beberapa hari hingga beberapa minggu.

Episode kebutuhan tidur berlebihan ini dapat terjadi beberapa kali dalam setahun, dan mungkin mereda seiring berjalannya waktu. Kelainan ini bisa dialami siapa saja, namun remaja laki-laki memiliki peluang empat kali lebih sering dibandingkan remaja perempuan.

Tanda-Tanda Memiliki Sleeping Beauty Syndrome

Sleeping beauty syndrome biasanya ditandai dengan beberapa gejala awal, di antaranya:

  • Rasa mengantuk parah disertai dengan ketidakmampuan untuk tetap terjaga
  • Peningkatan nafsu makan
  • Peningkatan gairah seksual
  • Berhalusinasi
  • Perubahan perilaku atau mudah tersinggung
  • Kecemasan atau depresi
  • Kebingungan

Menurut para ahli, gejala-gejala tersebut dialami setidaknya selama dua hari. Sedangkan episode tidur bisa berlangsung selama sekitar 10 hari hingga beberapa minggu. Uniknya, seseorang yang mengalami episode sleeping beauty syndrome ini kerap kesulitan mengingat apa yang telah dialaminya selama episode tidur berkepanjangan berlangsung.

Penyebab Sleeping Beauty Syndrome

Tidak diketahui dengan jelas apa penyebab seseorang bisa mengalami sleeping beauty syndrome. Dari penelitian yang dilakukan, para ahli hanya menyimpulkan bahwa kelainan ini mungkin disebabkan oleh beberapa hal, di antaranya:

  • Infeksi
  • Trauma fisik
  • Gangguan psikologis
  • Keracunan
  • Autoimun

Hasil penelitian juga menemukan bahwa sindrom ini berkaitan erat dengan hipotalamus dan talamus, yaitu bagian otak yang mengatur tidur, rasa lapar, dan perilaku seksual.

Selain itu, ada beberapa faktor yang bisa meningkatkan risiko episode sleeping beauty syndrome, di antaranya:

  • Gejala pilek atau flu disertai demam
  • Trauma di kepala
  • Kurang tidur
  • Stres parah
  • Kelelahan fisik
  • Usai bepergian
  • Vaksinasi
  • Konsumsi alkohol atau ganja

Tidak mudah untuk mendiagnosis sindrom sleeping beauty, apalagi gejala-gejala yang dialami termasuk gejala umum yang bisa salah dipahami sebagai narkolepsi, epilepsi, multiple sklerosis, tumor, migrain atau efek samping benzodiazepin atau obat sejenisnya.
