Intrauterine Device (IUD) atau disebut juga dengan istilah KB spiral adalah jenis alat kontrasepsi jangka panjang yang efektif membantu mencegah kehamilan. Alat kontrasepsi yang memiliki bentuk seperti huruf T ini diklaim 99% efektif membantu mencegah kehamilan. Alat ini disebut bekerja sebaik KB implan atau sterilisasi.

Berbeda dengan kondom atau pil KB yang bisa dibeli dan digunakan sendiri, untuk menggunakan KB spiral, Anda membutuhkan bantuan bidan dan dokter umum terlatih, atau dokter spesialis kandungan untuk pemasangannya. Alat ini akan dimasukkan ke dalam rahim di mana ada benang nilon halus yang melekat pada alat IUD, benang ini yang keluar melalui serviks namun masih berada pada posisi vagina bagian dalam. Anda dapat memeriksa IUD masih terpasang atau tidak melalui keberadaan benang ini.

 

Jenis-Jenis KB Spiral (IUD)

Memiliki bentuk seperti huruf T yang dipasang di dalam rahim, KB spiral (IUD) memiliki dua jenis yang berbeda, di antaranya:

 

KB spiral hormonal atau IUD hormonal

IUD hormonal bekerja dengan melepaskan progestin dalam jumlah harian ke dalam rahim. Hormon ini akan mengentalkan cairan di bagian leher rahim sehingga sperma akan kesulitan untuk memasuki rahim.

Kelebihan IUD hormonal di antaranya:

  • Dapat meringankan, mempersingkat dan dan mengurangi rasa sakit saat menstruasi
  • Membantu menurunkan risiko kanker endometrium
  • Dapat digunakan selama 3-5 minggu tanpa harus menggeser atau melepaskan alat

Kekurangan IUD hormonal di antaranya:

  • Berisiko menyebabkan pembekuan darah
  • Dapat menyebabkan sakit kepala, jerawat, nyeri payudara dan pendarahan yang tidak teratur
  • Tidak direkomendasikan bila Anda berisiko terhadap kanker payudara, kanker rahim atau kanker serviks

 

KB spiral non hormonal atau IUD non hormonal (IUD tembaga)

IUD non hormonal disebut juga dengan IUD tembaga yang bekerja mencegah kehamilan dengan menciptakan respon peradangan di rahim sehingga sperma atau sel telur tidak mungkin bertahan.

Kelebihan IUD non hormonal di antaranya:

  • Dapat bertahan setidaknya hingga 10 tahun tanpa digeser atau dilepaskan
  • Bebas hormon
  • Dapat digunakan sebagai kontrasepsi darurat jika dipasang tidak lebih dari lima hari setelah berhubungan seks tanpa kondom

Kekurangan IUD non hormonal di antaranya:

  • Meningkatkan aliran darah dan kram saat menstruasi
  • Adanya kemungkinan pendarahan di antara periode menstruasi
  • Tidak direkomendasikan bila memiliki masalah kesehatan tertentu

 

Manfaat Menggunakan KB Spiral (IUD)

Menggunakan alat kontrasepsi jenis KB spiral (IUD) memberikan berbagai manfaat, di antaranya:

  • Memiliki usia pakai yang relatif lama
  • Memiliki 99% efektivitas untuk mencegah kehamilan yang mirip dengan sterilisasi permanen
  • KB spiral (IUD) bisa dikeluarkan kapan saja Anda ingin kembali hamil
  • Dapat digunakan untuk usia berapa saja baik sejak remaja hingga periode menopause
  • KB spiral (IUD) bisa sekalian dipasang setelah melahirkan
  • IUD tembaga bahkan bisa dipasang 5 hari setelah berhubungan seksual tanpa pengaman untuk mencegah kehamilan

IUD mungkin bukan pilihan yang tepat apabila Anda sedang dalam perawatan kanker payudara atau memiliki riwayat kanker payudara, penyakit liver berat, memiliki rahim yang bentuknya tidak biasa, memiliki riwayat infeksi panggul, memiliki volume menstruasi yang berat, memiliki kadar zat besi yang rendah atau memiliki riwayat endometriosis.
