Kumur air garam telah lama dipercaya memiliki khasiat untuk menjaga kesehatan mulut. Jika dibandingkan dengan obat kumur yang mengandung alkohol, kumur air garam merupakan alternatif praktis dan ekonomis untuk mencegah infeksi pada gigi, gusi dan mulut.

Menghentikan pertumbuhan bakteri di mulut

Berkumur air garam membantu menghentikan pertumbuhan bakteri di dalam mulut. Air garam bekerja dengan meningkatkan keseimbangan pH di dalam mulut sehingga lingkungan tidak kondusif bagi bakteri untuk berkembang biak.

Sebuah penelitian di tahun 2017 juga menyebutkan bahwa rutin berkumur air garam dapat mengurangi lapisan plak dan mikroba dalam mulut sehingga mengurangi risiko terbentuknya karang gigi, bau mulut dan gigi berlubang.

Usai menjalani prosedur perawatan gigi seperti cabut gigi, Anda mungkin merasakan ngilu di sekitar area tempat gigi dicabut. Untuk meredakannya, Anda bisa berkumur air garam hingga rasa ngilu mereda. Kumur air garam membantu mendorong migrasi fibroblas pada daerah yang luka sehingga mempercepat proses penyembuhan.

Selain setelah mencabut gigi, Anda juga bisa berkumur air garam ketika mengalami sakit gigi, infeksi gusi, sakit tenggorokan, sariawan dan meredakan beberapa jenis alergi seperti tenggorokan bengkak.

 

Meredakan sakit tenggorokan

Berkumur air gram dapat mengurangi sakit tenggorokan saat pilek atau flu. Sebuah penelitian di tahun 2020 mengungkapkan bahwa berkumur air garam dapat secara efektif mengurangi infeksi saluran pernapasan atas jika dilakukan rutin selama 2-3 hari. Kumur air garam juga membantu menekan infeksi saluran tenggorkan akibat paparan virus Covid-19.

Cara Berkumur dengan Air Garam

Kumur air garam sangat mudah dilakukan dengan bahan-bahan yang ada di rumah. Anda hanya membutuhkan bahan-bahan seperti air hangat, garam dan baking soda (tidak wajib). Berikut ini takaran bahan-bahan dan cara membuat larutan kumur air garam:

Bahan-bahan:

  • 250 ml air hangat
  • 1 sendok teh garam (atau setengah sendok teh garam bagi Anda yang sesnitif)
  • 2 sendok teh baking soda (opsional)

Cara membuat:

  1. Siapkan 250 ml air hangat dalam gelas
  2. Masukkan garam dan baking soda ke dalam gelas, aduk rata
  3. Masukkan larutan air garam ke dalam mulut secukupnya, kemudian kumur hingga mencapai bagian belakang tenggorokan, sela gigi dan gusi
  4. Keluarkan air dari mulut
  5. Lakukan hingga seluruh larutan habis

Anda dapat berkumur air garam 1-2 kali dalam sehari atau hingga keluhan yang Anda rasakan mereda. Terapi ini relatif aman dilakukan untuk anak-anak dan dewasa, namun bagi pengidap hipertensi sebaiknya konsultasikan terlebih dahulu ke dokter.
