Sendawa terkadang dianggap sebagai suatu hal yang memalukan. Namun sebenarnya, sendawa adalah cara alami tubuh untuk mengeluarkan kelebihan gas dari perut.

Walaupun demikian, seharusnya sendawa hanya terjadi sesekali saja. Sendawa yang dialami terus-menerus mungkin disebabkan oleh kondisi kesehatan tertentu.

 

Penyebab Bersendawa

Makanan dan minuman yang dikunyah oleh mulut kemudian berjalan dari kerongkongan hingga ke perut. Di dalam perut ada asam dan enzim pencernaan yang akan menguraikan makanan menjadi nutrisi yang dibutuhkan tubuh. Selama proses penguraian tersebut tercipta gas sebagai produk sampingan.

Selain itu, saat memasukkan makanan dan minuman ke dalam mulut, udara juga dapat tidak sengaja ikut tertelan. Kumpulan udara yang terjebak di dalam perut bersama dengan gas yang dihasilkan dari produk penguraian makanan akan dikeluarkan saat bersendawa.

Sendawa juga mungkin disebabkan oleh kondisi lain, seperti GERD. GERD dapat menimbulkan keluhan heartburn yang digambarkan sebagai sensasi terbakar di tenggorokan dan dada yang terjadi akibat asam lambung naik kembali ke kerongkongan.

Sendawa juga dapat disebabkan oleh beberapa penyebab lain, di antaranya:

  • Baru saja makan dalam porsi yang sangat besar
  • Makan terlalu cepat
  • Makan makanan yang menghasilkan gas, seperti sayuran, makanan manis, pati-patian, atau makanan kaya serat
  • Baru saja mengonsumsi minuman berkarbonasi
  • Mengalami gejala sindrom iritasi usus yang terkadang disertai nyeri perut, sembelit atau diare
  • Mengalami gastritis, yaitu peradangan pada dinding saluran pencernaan
  • Sindrom Ruminasi, sindrom langka yang menyebabkan pengidapnya mengeluarkan sebagian atau seluruh makanan yang sudah ditelan

Cara Mengatasi Sendawa Terus-Menerus

Normalnya sendawa terjadi sesekali dan segera berhenti terutama setelah makan. Namun beberapa sendawa mungkin dialami terus-menerus dan mengganggu aktivitas.

Berikut adalah beberapa hal yang dapat dilakukan untuk menghentikan sendawa terus-menerus:

  • Berjalan-jalan setelah makan untuk membantu melancarkan pencernaan
  • Berbaring menyamping atau berlutut dan menempelkan lutut ke dada sampai gas keluar
  • Minum antasida yang bermanfaat membantu menetralkan asam lambung. Jenis antasida berbentuk cair bekerja lebih efektif ketimbang tablet kunyah atau bentuk antasida lainnya
  • Mengonsumsi wedang jahe setelah makan
  • Membatasi aktivitas yang justru membuat Anda tidak sengaja menelan udara seperti tertawa, minum atau makan terlalu cepat
