Dalam memilih sunscreen, salah satu hal yang perlu Anda perhatikan adalah kandungan SPF di dalamnya. Sebenarnya, apa itu SPF dan benarkah semakin tinggi kandungannya berarti sunscreen bekerja lebih efektif? Yuk simak dalam ulasan berikut!

 

Apa Itu SPF dalam Sunscreen?

Ketika melihat botol kemasan sunscreen, Anda akan mendapati angka SPF dalam kemasan. Saat ini sunscreen yang beredar di pasaran memiliki angka SPF yang berbeda-beda, mulai SPF 15 hingga 30.

SPF adalah sun protection factor, yaitu pengukuran berapa lama sinar UVB yang dapat memberikan efek terbakar pada kulit. Semakin tinggi angka SPF maka perlindungan dari sinar UVB juga semakin lama.

Apabila dalam kemasan tertulis SPF 15, maka produk tersebut dapat melindungi kulit sebanyak 15 x 10 menit yaitu 150 menit atau sekitar 2,5 jam. Dengan perhitungan yang sama, maka sunscreen SPF 50 berarti dapat melindungi kulit Anda selama 50 x 10 menit atau sekitar 500 menit.

Namun, apakah SPF tinggi selalu berarti lebih baik? Faktanya, tidak demikian. SPF adalah angka untuk mengukur kekuatan lama perlindungan sunscreen, artinya semakin tinggi SPF maka semakin lama perlindungan yang bisa diberikan. Para ahli mengungkapkan bahwa sunscreen dengan SPF rendah juga dapat memiliki kualitas perlindungan yang sama baiknya dengan SPF tinggi.

Dilansir dari Skin Cancer Foundation, sunscreen dengan SPF 30 dapat menghalangi paparan sinar matahri hingga 97%, sunscreen SPF 50 dapat menghalangi hingga 98% dan SPF 100 dapat menghalangi hampir 99%. Meski menunjukkan perlindungan paling optimal namun sunscreen SPF 100 umumnya tidak nyaman dikenakan di kulit secara rutin.

Hal ini yang menyebabkan para ahli tidak merekomendasikan penggunaan sunscreen dengan SPF lebih dari 50, karena umumnya produk tersebut tidak nyaman ketika harus dioleskan kembali (reapply). 

Untuk itu, dalam memlih sunscreen sebaiknya tidak hanya menjadikan faktor SPF sebagai satu-satunya faktor pertimbangan. Anda juga perlu memerhatikan jenis kulit, jenis aktivitas, dan kandungan dalam sunscreen tersebut.

Tips Memilih Sunscreen

Jika angka SPF tidak dapat dijadikan patokan mutlak, lantas bagaimana cara efektif dalam memilih sunscreen?. Pada dasarnya, semua jenis sunscreen baik untuk melindungi kulit dari sinar matahari. Untuk memilih mana yang sesuai dengan kulit, Anda bisa memperhatikan beberapa faktor berikut: 

  • Jenis sunscreen, apakah jenis mineral atau kimiawi
  • Kandungan SPF
  • Bahan aktif yang ditambahkan
  • Tekstur dan kekentalan
  • Spektrum sunscreen, apakah dapat melindungi UVA dan UVB
  • Sifat komedogenik

Bagi pemilik kulit berminyak dan berjerawat umumnya dianjurkan memilih sunscreen mineral yang mengandung titanium oksida dan zinc oksida yang relatif lebih aman dan tidak menyebabkan komedo serta jerawat.

Sedangkan bagi pemilik kulit kering dan sensitif dianjurkan memilih sunscreen yang mengandung titanium dioksida yang minim reaksi alergi pada kulit. Sebelum memilih sunscreen, pastikan Anda membaca terlebih dahulu kandungan yang terdapat di dalamnya.

Anda juga perlu memperhatikan apakah jenis sunscreen yang digunakan bergenis gel, krim, lotion, spray atau bubuk. Beberapa jenis kulit dapat mengalami alergi dari penggunaan sunscreen spray atau lotion sehingga lebih aman memilih jenis lainnya yang tidak memicu alergi atau iritasi kulit.  

 

SPF adalah angka penting dalam pertimbangan memilih sunscreen namun angka tersebut bukanlah patokan utama dalam memilih sunscreen. Berapa pun SPF sunscreen yang Anda pilih pastikan untuk rutin mengoleskan kembali sunscreen agar mendapat perlindungan optimal.
