Bau mulut dapat menyebabkan seseorang tidak percaya diri. Kondisi ini bisa disebabkan oleh kurangnya kebersihan gigi dan mulut, pengaruh obat-obatan atau penyakit tertentu dan jenis makanan yang dikonsumsi.

 

Makanan Penyebab Bau Mulut

Bau mulut dapat disebabkan oleh banyak hal, salah satunya adalah makanan yang Anda santap. Bau mulut yang disebabkan oleh makanan umumnya tidak berbahaya dan dapat mereda setelah Anda berkumur atau membersihkan gigi dan mulut. Beberapa makanan yang dapat menyebabkan bau mulut, antara lain:

Bawang Putih

Bawang putih merupakan keluarga tanaman allium yang memiliki kandungan sulfur cukup tinggi. Sulfur inilah yang menyebabkan makanan memiliki aroma yang khas ketika dipotong atau dikupas. Jika aroma ini bercampur dengan bakteri yang ada di udara, hal ini dapat menimbulkan bau yang semakin tajam dan tidak sedap.

Bawang putih dapat terus menyebabkan bau mulut berjam-jam setelah makan. Setelah dicerna oleh tubuh, senyawa dan zat lainnya dalam bawang akan diserap ke dalam aliran darah dan dibawa ke paru-paru sehingga menyebabkan bau mulut.

Daging Merah

Daging merah merupakan sumber portein yang baik untuk dikonsumsi setiap hari. Namun jika Anda terlalu banyak mengonsumsi daging merah, hal ini dapat menyebabkan bau mulut. Hal ini disebabkan oleh proses pencernaan daging merah akan menghasilkan amonia yang memiliki aroma tajam.

Ikan

Pernahkah Anda mengalami bau mulut tidak sedap setelah makan makanan ikan tuna atau salmon kalengan? Tentunya hal ini bukan disebabkan oleh pengolahan ikan yang kurang matang. Beberapa orang mengalami bau mulut tidak sedap setelah makan ikan karena ikan mengandung senyawa trimethylamines yang jika bercampur dengan air (terutama air liur) dapat mengeluarkan aroma tidak sedap.

Produk Susu

Olahan produk susu seperti susu, yoghurt dan keju juga dapat menyebabkan aroma bau mulut yang tidak sedap. Hal ini disebabkan oleh kandungan asam amino dalam susu atau keju bercampur dengan bakteri dalam mulut sehingga menyebabkan aroma tidak sedap.

Kopi

Bagi Anda yang memiliki kebiasaan minum kopi rentan memiliki bau mulut yang cenderung asam setelah minum kopi. Kandungan asam yang tinggi dari kopi bersama dengan bakteri dalam mulut dapat menyebabkan bau mulut tidak sedap.

Bau mulut ini juga bisa Anda alami setelah minum minuman mengandung kafein lainnya seperti teh. Selain bau mulut, kandungan kafein juga dapat menyebabkan mulut kering.

Buah citrus

Anda mungkin menyukai aroma buah jeruk, namun mengonsumsi buah jeruk dapat menyebabkan bau mulut menjadi asam. Kandungan gula dalam buah juga dapat bercampur bakteri dalam mulut yang menimbulkan bau tidak sedap.

Selai kacang

Selai kacang adalah salah satu bahan makanan yang kaya protein dan digemari segala umur, baik anak-anak hingga dewasa. Namun ketika mengonsumsi selai kacang terlalu banyak Anda dapat mengalami risiko bau mulut. Kacang mengandung acetic acid yang menyebabkan bau mulut, terutama jika selai kacang mengandung gula yang tinggi.

 

Cara Menghilangkan Bau Mulut Tidak Sedap

Bau mulut akibat mengonsumsi makanan tertentu sebenarnya tidak berbahaya. Anda dapat menghilangkan bau mulut tidak sedap tersebut dengan cara berikut:

 

Minum banyak air. Beberapa makanan dan minuman yang memicu bau mulut juga menyebabkan mulut kering. Untuk mengatasinya, Anda bisa minum air hingga mulut terasa lembap. Air yang Anda minum juga berfungsi untuk membilas rongga mulut yang baik bagi kesehatan mulut.

 

Mengunyah permen karet. Mengonsumsi permen karet bukan hanya menghilangkan bau mulut namun juga merangsang produksi air liur. Mengunyah permen karet juga membantu membilas rongga mulut dan menyingkirkan bakteri dan plak pemicu bau mulut.

 

Bau mulut yang tidak disebabkan oleh kondisi medis atau konsumsi obat-obatan bukanlah kondisi yang berbahaya. Jika bau mulut tidak dapat diatasi dengan pengobatan rumahan, sebaiknya konsultasikan ke dokter.
