Produksi sel telur wanita dapat terus berkurang seiring bertambahnya usia. Umumnya kondisi ini bisa terjadi ketika memasuki usia 40 tahun atau lebih (menopause). Hal ini menyebabkan sebagian besar perempuan khawatir peluang untuk memiliki anak akan berkurang. Untuk meningkatkan peluang agar tetap bisa memiliki anak, salah satu cara yang bisa dilakukan adalah dengan pembekuan sel telur.

Apa itu pembekuan sel telur?

Dilansir dari Mayo Clinic, pembekuan sel telur atau yang dikenal juga dengan mature oocyte cryopreservation adalah prosedur pengambilan sel telur wanita yang belum dibuahi dari dalam rahim yang kemudian dibekukan dan disimpan untuk digunakan di kemudian hari.

Apabila kelak wanita membutuhkan sel telur tersebut, maka sel akan dicairkan untuk kemudian dibuahi dan ditanam di dalam rahim. Dengan prosedur ini, wanita akan tetap memiliki peluang untuk hamil meskipun sudah tidak memasuki usia subur.

Alasan wanita melakukan pembekuan sel telur

Pembekuan sel telur memiliki banyak manfaat bagi wanita terutama dalam perencanaan kehamilan. Selain itu, beberapa wanita yang sedang dalam pengobatan medis untuk penyakit serius juga dapat melakukan pembekuan sel telur sebagai upaya meningkatkan peluang kehamilan.

Dilansir dari Cleveland Clinic, berikut ini beberapa penyebab wanita melakukan pembekuan sel telur:

1. Membantu penderita penyakit serius

Bagi wanita penderita penyakit serius seperti kanker atau penyakit lainnya yang membutuhkan kemoterapi, radioterapi dan perawatan medis lainnya, pembekuan sel telur dapat membantu meningkatkan kemungkinan untuk memiliki anak di masa depan.

Pengobatan medis untuk penyakit serius dapat mengganggu fungsi organ reproduksi dan tingkat kesuburan wanita yang dapat menurunkan peluang kehamilan. Dengan melakukan pembekuan sel telur, wanita tetap dapat menjalani program kehamilan dengan sel telur yang sehat usai menjalani rangkaian pengobatan medis yang dibutuhkan.

2. Memperpanjang masa subur

Di luar alasan medis, pembekuan sel telur juga bermanfaat bagi wanita yang ingin menunda kehamilan karena alasan pribadi seperti karir, risiko pekerjaan, pendidikan, kesiapan mental dan finansial, dan lain-lain. Setelah wanita merasa siap untuk menjalani kehamilan, sel telur dapat dicairkan sehingga wanita memiliki peluang kehamilan lebih tinggi dengan kualitas sel telur yang prima.

Efek samping dan risiko pembekuan sel telur

Prosedur pembekuan sel telur relatif aman dilakukan dan minim efek samping. Sebelum pengambilan sel telur, pasien akan diberi injeksi hormon untuk meningkatkan produksi sel telur. Efek samping terapi ini dapat menimbulkan rasa nyeri, perut kembung, mual, muntah dan diare.

Pada beberapa kasus yang jarang terjadi, efek terapi ini dapat menyebabkan ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) yang menyebabkan ovarium mengalami pembengkakan dan mengeluarkan cairan di dalam tubuh. Sebagian besar kasus OHSS merupakan kasus ringan dan menyebabkan rasa tidak nyaman untuk sementara, namun pada komplikasi yang parah, kondisi ini membutuhkan penanganan segera dan serius.

Sedangkan untuk efek samping setelah prosedur pengambilan sel telur umumnya muncul rasa nyeri, kram, perut kembung, muncul flek, sakit kepala, dan penambahan berat badan. Jika Anda merasakan keluhan tersebut, konsultasikan dengan dokter agar segera mendapat penanganan.
