How it Works

Aclidinium bromide is part of a group of medicines known as bronchodilators, that helps to open the lower airways. It works by relaxing the muscles of the respiratory tract and widening the lower respiratory tract, the bronchi and bronchioles, making it easier to breathe and improving airflow into the lungs.

Indications

This medication is prescribed as a long-term treatment to prevent symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath in conditions including:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a group of chronic lung conditions that interfere with airflow

  • Chronic bronchitis, a persistent inflammation and swelling of the airways

  • Emphysema, a condition that damages the air sacs in the lungs

Contraindications

Aclidinium bromide should not be used by patients with:

  • A history of allergy to aclidinium bromide or lactose

  • Sudden or acute shortness of breath (this medication is not meant for quick relief)

This drug will not stop asthma attacks or sudden episodes of shortness of breath. In such cases, a fast-acting inhaler prescribed by a doctor should be used instead.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, nasopharyngitis symptoms (such as runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, or facial pain), and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and diarrhea.

If you develop severe chest tightness, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, stop using the medication and seek emergency medical help.

Types

Aclidinium bromide is available as an inhalation powder with 400 mcg of active ingredient per dose.

Dosage

Aclidinium bromide is taken using a dry-powder inhaler, inhaled by mouth. The usual dose is twice daily, or every 12 hours, can be taken at the same times each day. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and read the labels, do not use more or less than prescribed. Do not increase the frequency of use without medical advice. Ask your doctors if you have some things that need more clarity.

Safety

Before starting treatment, inform your doctor if you have or have had history of glaucoma, enlarged prostate gland, bladder disorders, or any condition that makes urination difficult.

This drug should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss potential risks and benefits with your doctor. It is also not known whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
