Meningitis adalah penyakit infeksi yang menyebabkan peradangan pada selaput yang menyelubungi otak dan sumsum tulang belakang (meningen). Penyakit ini dapat disebabkan oleh virus, bakteri dan jamur.

Orang yang mengalami meningitis dapat mengalami gejala berupa demam, leher kaku, sakit kepala, mual dan muntah, kejang, hingga susah berkonsentrasi. Penyakit ini bisa dialami oleh anak-anak hingga dewasa. Jika tidak ditangani dengan tepat, meningitis dapat berkembang menjadi parah dan menyebabkan kerusakan otak, tuli permanen, gagal ginjal, memiliki masalah memori hingga kematian.

Penyebaran meningitis tergantung dari penyebabnya. Bakteri meningitis dapat menyebar melalui percikan air liur saat bersin, batuk, berciuman, berbagai peralatan makan, sikat gigi atau barang-barang pribadi lainnya.

Saat musim umroh/haji, Arab Saudi menjadi tempat berkumpulnya umat muslim dari berbagai penjuru dunia termasuk dari negara di benua Afrika yang menjadi tempat penyebaran penyakit meningitis. Sebagai salah satu upaya pencegahan penularan meningitis, diperlukan vaksin meningitis sebagai salah satu persyaratan melakukan ibadah umroh atau haji.

Cara Pencegahan Meningitis

Meningitis adalah penyakit peradangan serius yang berbahaya dan membutuhkan penanganan yang tepat. Penyakit meningitis bukan hanya membuat Anda sulit beraktivits namun dapat menyebabkan komplikasi dan efek jangka panjang setelah sembuh.

Selain melakukan vaksinasi meningitis, ada beberapa cara yang bisa Anda lakukan untuk mencegah meningitis, yaitu:

  • Rajin mencuci tangan. Cuci tangan Anda dengan air mengalir dan sabun. Biasakan untuk mencuci tangan di waktu penting seperti sebelum makan, setelah menggunakan toilet, menyentuh binatang dan ketika tangan terlihat kotor terutama setelah menghabiskan waktu di tempat umum.
  • Jaga kebersihan diri sendiri. Hindari berbagi alat makan dan minum terutama dengan orang asing, juga hindari berbagi barang pribadi seperti sikat gigi atau lip balm.
  • Jaga kesehatan. Jaga daya tahan tubuh Anda dengan istirahat yang cukup, olahraga teratur, makan makanan sehat dengan banyak buah segar dan sayuran serta biji-bijian. Sempatkan untuk istirahat yang cukup agar daya tahan tubuh Anda tidak menurun.
