Sejak zaman dahulu, orang telah mencoba mencari cara untuk memengaruhi jenis kelamin bayi yang akan lahir. Ada yang berusaha memperbanyak konsumsi daging untuk mendapatkan anak laki-laki, sebaliknya ada pula yang memperbanyak konsumsi sayuran untuk mendapatkan anak perempuan.

Perlu diingat bahwa sebenarnya hal-hal tersebut belum ada pembuktian medisnya. Anda juga tidak bisa sembarangan menyalahkan pasangan atas jenis kelamin bayi yang dilahirkan.

 

Faktor Utama yang Menentukan Jenis Kelamin Bayi

Faktanya, jenis kelamin bayi pada manusia terutama ditentukan oleh kombinasi kromosom yang diturunkan oleh kedua orang tua. Setiap manusia memiliki 23 pasang kromosom, di mana salah satu pasang kromosom tersebut adalah kromosom seks. Wanita memiliki dua kromosom X (XX), sementara pria memiliki satu kromosom X dan satu kromosom Y (XY).

Dalam proses fertilisasi, penentuan jenis kelamin bayi dilakukan secara acak. Artinya, Anda maupun pasangan tidak memiliki kendali langsung terhadap jenis kelamin bayi yang akan dilahirkan. Ketika sperma dengan kromosom X menyatu dengan sel telur, maka akan dihasilkan bayi berjenis kelamin perempuan. Sebaliknya ketika sperma dengan kromosom Y yang berhasil menyatu dan membuahi sel telur, maka bayi yang dihasilkan adalah laki-laki.

Meningkatkan Peluang Bayi Laki-Laki dengan Metode Shettles

Sebagian kebudayaan berharap agar sebuah keluarga dikaruniai bayi laki-laki dengan alasan tertentu. Hal ini mendorong beberapa orang untuk berusaha lebih keras untuk meningkatkan peluang mendapatkan bayi laki-laki.

Metode Shettles adalah salah satu bentuk manipulasi konsepsi yang dirancang untuk membantu meningkatkan peluang jenis kelamin janin yang diinginkan. Metode ini pertama kali diperkenalkan oleh Dr. Landrum Shettles pada tahun 1960-an yang mengklaim dapat membantu pasangan untuk memengaruhi jenis kelamin bayi yang akan dilahirkan.

Metode ini didasari oleh gagasan bahwa sperma yang membawa kromosom X dan sperma yang membawa kromosom Y memiliki karakteristik berbeda yang dapat dipengaruhi beberapa faktor, di antaranya:

Dr. Shettles menyatakan bahwa berhubungan intim lebih dekat dengan ovulasi akan meningkatkan peluang sperma Y (pria) untuk mencapai sel telur lebih cepat karena sperma Y bergerak lebih cepat, tetapi memiliki masa hidup yang lebih pendek daripada sperma X (wanita).

Posisi berhubungan intim meningkatkan kemungkinan sperma Y mencapai sel telur lebih cepat, seperti posisi penetrasi yang lebih dalam.

Lingkungan yang lebih asam akan menguntungkan sperma Y, sementara lingkungan yang lebih basa akan menguntungkan sperma X.

Meskipun metode ini telah menjadi populer di kalangan pasangan yang berusaha memengaruhi jenis kelamin bayi, bukti ilmiah yang mendukung efektivitasnya masih terbatas. Beberapa studi menunjukkan bahwa metode ini memiliki tingkat keberhasilan yang rendah dan hasilnya tidak selalu konsisten.

 

Bisa disimpulkan bahwa sebenarnya tidak ada metode yang menjamin 100% jenis kelamin bayi yang diinginkan. Dalam kasus tertentu, Anda bisa mungkin bisa memilih jenis kelamin melalui teknologi Injeksi Sperma Intacytoplasmic (ICSI) sebagai salah satu bagian dari program bayi tabung. Namun, beberapa negara membatasi praktik penggunaan teknologi ini dengan alasan tertentu.
