How It Works
Magnesium citrate is a laxative used to help relieve constipation (difficulty passing stool). It promotes bowel movements and retains water within the intestines. This mechanism makes stools easier to pass. In addition, magnesium citrate also helps to increase magnesium levels in the body.
Indications
This medicine is used to treat constipation and to raise magnesium levels in the body.
Contraindication
Patients who are on a low-sodium diet or eating foods low in salt should not use this medicine.

Types
In Indonesia, only magnesium citrate supplement tablets are currently available. Preparations available outside Indonesia include:

Dosage
Magnesium supplementation
Adult dosage: 310–420 mg per day.
Treating constipation
Adult dosage: 2–4 tablets taken at night, or 195–300 mL as a single or divided dose.
Child dosage:
- 2–6 years old: 60–90 mL as a single or divided dose.
- 6–12 years old: 90–210 mL as a single or divided dose.
- Over 12 years old: 195–300 mL as a single or divided dose.
Safety
Pregnancy:
Magnesium citrate is classified as FDA Category C in pregnancy. Animal studies show adverse fetal effects, while adequate and well-controlled studies in humans are still lacking. Therefore, weigh potential benefits and risks carefully and use with caution in pregnant women.
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics (tetracycline or doxycycline)
Taking tetracycline or doxycycline together with magnesium citrate can lower tetracycline or doxycycline levels in the body due to impaired absorption.
