Salicylic acid atau asam salisilat sering kita jumpai dalam produk perawatan kulit wajah khususnya yang berkhasiat untuk melawan jerawat. Selain dalam obat jerawat, salicylic acid juga banyak dijumpai dalam produk perawatan wajah lainnya seperti sabun muka, exfoliating serum dan exfoliating toner. Nah sebenarnya, apa itu salicylic acid dan manfaatnya bagi kulit?

Apa itu salicylic acid dan bagaimana cara kerjanya?

Salicylic acid adalah salah satu jenis beta hydroxy acid (BHA) yang banyak digunakan untuk eksfoliasi kulit. Salicylic acid merupakan BHA yang larut dalam lemak. Jenis acid ini dapat menembus lapisan lemak kulit yang memenuhi pori-pori dan masuk lebih dalam untuk mengeksfoliasi dan membersihkan minyak, kotoran dan sel kulit mati yang menyumbat pori-pori.

Salicylic acid juga bermanfaat mengurangi produksi sebum sehingga produksi minyak dan komedo di wajah bisa menurun. Sifatnya inilah yang membuat kandungan ini banyak digunakan untuk eksfoliasi kulit dan menuntaskan jerawat.

Manfaat salicylic acid

1. Eksfoliasi

Salicylc acid adalah obat-obatan yang merupakan golongan keratolitik. Obat ini dapat membantu mengangkat sel kulit mati dan meningkatkan kelembaban kulit. Penggunaan skincare yang mengandung salicylic acid dapat membantu mengangkat lapisan kulit paling atas sehingga membuat kulit lebih halus dengan tekstur kulit lebih rata.

2. Mengatasi jerawat

Jerawat dapat disebabkan oleh bakteri, tumpukan sel kulit mati yang menyumbat pori-pori dan produksi minyak berlebih. Dengan penggunaan skincare berbahan salicylic acid secara rutin, kandungan asam salisilat yang bersifat antibakteri akan mengangkat sumbatan keratin di kulit sehingga membantu mengatasi jerawat.

3. Mengatasi komedo

Penggunaan salicylic acid dipercaya ampuh untuk mengatasi komedi jenis whiteheads dan blackheads yang sering mengganggu penampilan. Dalam mengatasi komedo, salicylic acid bertugas menghancurkan material yang menyumbat pori-pori kulit seperti kelebihan minyak dan sel-sel kulit mati sehingga kulit tampak lebih bersih dan halus. 

4. Mengatasi ketombe

Selain untuk kulit wajah, salicylic acid juga bermanfaat untuk mengatasi ketombe. Kandungan salicylic acid dalam sampo dapat mengangkat sel kulit mati di kulit kepala yang terbukti efektif untuk mengatasi psoriasis dan seborrheic dermatitis.

Produk skincare yang menggunakan salicylic acid umumnya dapat digunakan secara bebas. Beberapa jenis obat salicylic acid dapat digunakan dalam bentuk obat seperti krim, losion, salep, sampo, sabun muka dan produk perawatan kulit lainnya. Namun jika Anda memiliki masalah kulit serius, sebaiknya konsultasikan ke dokter untuk penggunaan produk atau obat salicylic acid.

Efek samping salicylic acid

Sebenarnya pemakaian salicylyc acid cenderung aman bagi kulit, namun pada beberapa orang penggunaan salicylic acid dapat menimbulkan sensasi menyengat, gatal, kulit mengelupas dan reaksi alergi seperti ruam kulit yang gatal.

Apabila penggunaan salicylic acid menimbulan iritasi kulit ringan, kulit terasa panas dan kulit menunjukkan ruam-ruam maka segera hentikan penggunaan produk tersebut untuk sementara waktu. Selain itu, karena asam ini sendiri dapat menyebabkan eksfoliasi kulit, konsultasikan cara penggunaannya pada dokter Anda. Jika keadaan kulit tidak membaik setelah Anda menghentikan penggunaan salicylic acid maka segera konsultasikan pada dokter agar segera mendapat penanganan.
