How It Works
Codipront is a combination medicine made up of codeine, phenyltoloxamine, and guaifenesin. Codeine functions by acting on the brainstem’s medulla to suppress the cough reflex. It also works as a cough suppressant due to the action of phenyltoloxamine, which targets the respiratory tract. Additionally, phenyltoloxamine has anti-allergic effects that help relieve symptoms triggered by allergies.
Indications
This medicine is prescribed for the relief of dry (non-productive) cough, including coughs triggered by allergic reactions.
Contraindication
This medicine should not be taken by individuals with the following conditions:

Lung function impairment that prevents normal oxygen intake or carbon dioxide elimination

Acute asthma episodes

Coma
-
Enlarged prostate with urinary retention

Narrow-angle glaucoma
-
Disorders affecting the digestive tract

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
-
Children under 2 years of age
Side Effects

Skin itching

Constipation (hard stools)

Blurred or impaired vision

Serious risks such as breathing difficulty or respiratory failure
Types
This medication is offered in the following forms:

Capsules containing 30 mg of codeine and 10 mg of phenyltoloxamine

60 ml bottle of syrup
Dosage
Dosage should be adjusted based on the patient's age and specific formulation used:
Capsules

Adults: 1 capsule twice a day

Children 14 years and older: 1 capsule twice a day
Syrup

Adults and children aged 14 years old and up: 3 measuring spoons twice a day

Children aged 6–14 years old: 2 measuring spoons twice a day

Children aged 4–6 years old: 1 measuring spoon twice a day

Children aged 2–4 years old: ½ measuring spoon twice a day
Safety
Codipront is classified as pregnancy category C. Animal studies have shown potential harm to the fetus, but human data are not available. The medicine is not recommended for use during breastfeeding, as codeine can pass into breast milk. Since codeine is an opioid, this medicine should only be used under medical supervision and for a short duration to prevent the risk of dependency or misuse.
Drug Interactions
Codipront can cause serious interactions when used with other drugs. These include:
- Decreased alertness and breathing difficulties when combined with:

Antipsychotics (used for mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or delusional disorders)

Barbiturates (sedatives and sleep-inducing medications)

Painkillers

Anti-allergy medications

- Alcohol may worsen its side effects and interfere with mental focus and decision-making.
