How It Works

Aliskiren fumarate is primarily used to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by inhibiting the renin enzyme produced by the kidneys, which plays a key role in regulating blood pressure. By blocking this enzyme, aliskiren helps maintain normal blood pressure levels.

Aliskiren fumarate is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).

Aliskiren fumarate should not be used in the following conditions:

    • Azole antifungals

    • Cyclosporin (an immunosuppressant)

    • Quinidine (used to treat irregular heartbeats)

For adults (18 years and older): 150 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 300 mg once daily if needed.

Safety

Pregnancy:

Aliskiren fumarate is classified as FDA Category D, indicating positive evidence of risk to the fetus based on adverse reactions observed in investigational or human studies. Therefore, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

Drug Interactions

ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril)

The concurrent use of aliskiren fumarate with ACE inhibitors, like captopril, may lead to:

  • Risk of kidney damage

  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)

  • Increased risk of hyperkalemia (dangerously high potassium levels). Therefore, it is necessary to consult further if there is a use of drugs that coincide with aliskiren fumarate.

Azole antifungal medications (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole)

When used together with azole antifungals, aliskiren fumarate's blood levels may increase, raising the risk of side effects. Careful consultation with your doctor is advised if these medications are used concurrently.
