The flu is a viral infection that typically comes with symptoms like fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, and headaches. However, these symptoms can also appear in other diseases. While fever and chills may resolve on their own, they could also indicate a more serious underlying health condition that requires medical attention.
Diseases with Similar Symptoms to Flu
The flu, or influenza, is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system, including the throat, lungs, and nose. Typical flu symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, headaches, sore throat, and a runny nose. However, these symptoms are not exclusive to the flu and can also be found in other illnesses.
In addition to sharing similar symptoms, these diseases can also be transmitted in similar ways. Many of these infections spread by contact with droplets or saliva, or by sharing infected personal items. Direct contact with an infected person, traveling, or being in environments where germs can spread easily also contribute to transmission. Being in humid areas where ticks or mosquitoes are present can also increase the risk of getting infected.
Some Diseases With Similar Symptoms to Flu
Colds
Colds and the flu are both caused by viral infections. They share symptoms like sore throat and nasal congestion. However, symptoms of colds tend to develop gradually over several days and they are not usually accompanied by chest pain or body aches, unlike the flu, where symptoms appear suddenly and often include muscle pain.
Pneumonia
Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The symptoms of pneumonia, such as fever, chest pain, and cough, are similar to those of the flu. Pneumonia can occur on its own or develop as a secondary infection after the flu infection. In bacterial pneumonia, it is typically treated with antibiotics.
Strep Throat
Strep throat, caused by Streptococcus bacteria, leads to throat inflammation and is marked by chills, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Unlike the flu, strep throat usually doesn’t cause coughing.
Bronchitis
Bronchitis shares several symptoms with the flu, but it doesn’t typically involve a high fever. Symptoms of bronchitis are generally centered in the chest and throat, such as a persistent cough that can last longer than a flu-related cough.
Mononucleosis
Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus and spreads through saliva. A notable difference between mononucleosis and the flu is the enlargement of the spleen that occurs in mononucleosis. Additionally, mononucleosis tends to last longer, with symptoms potentially lingering for months.
Covid-19
Covid-19 and the flu share many symptoms, including fever, cough, and fatigue. However, Covid-19 symptoms can sometimes be milder than the flu, although in severe cases, Covid-19 can lead to shortness of breath and may require hospitalization.
One key symptom that sets Covid-19 apart from the flu is the loss of taste or smell, which is more commonly associated with Covid-19.
Meningitis
Meningitis is an infection of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and it typically causes headaches, stiff neck, and fever. While the flu also causes fever and headaches, it is not usually accompanied by a stiff neck.
Meningitis is a serious condition that requires urgent medical treatment. If you experience symptoms of meningitis, you should seek immediate medical attention.
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
RSV infection is caused by a virus that is often mistaken for the flu or a cold. Unlike the flu, symptoms of RSV infection usually develop gradually and tend to resolve on their own. With plenty of fluids and rest, RSV infection can typically be managed at home.
Several diseases share symptoms with the flu, but they have different causes and treatments. Identifying the cause of your illness is key to receiving the right treatment.
