Belakangan ini pemakaian kalung air purifier sedang menjadi tren di masyarakat. Kalung air purifier dipercaya dapat membantu menyaring udara para pemakainya sehingga udara yang dihirup menjadi lebih bersih dan bebas dari virus Covid-19. Namun, benarkah pemakaian kalung air purifier efektif mencegah penularan Covid-19?

Manfaat air purifier untuk mencegah penyebaran Covid-19

Virus Covid-19 diketahui dapat menular melalui droplet atau tetesan air liur dan penularan udara (airborne). Dalam sebuah penelitian disebutkan bahwa virus Covid-19 dapat bertahan di udara selama tiga jam dalam bentuk aerosol. Virus dalam bentuk aerosol memiliki potensi bergerak melayang di udara dan melintasi jarak jauh. Apabila aerosol ini terhirup, maka seseorang dapat terinfeksi Covid-19.

Untuk menyaring udara agar terbebas dari aerosol, Anda dapat menggunakan air purifier. Air purifier memiliki penyaring yang berfungsi untuk menyaring udara dari debu, polusi, kuman dan virus. Air purifier bekerja dengan menghisap udara di ruangan lalu udara tersebut akan disaring oleh bagian penyaringan. Setelah udara disaring, maka udara yang bersih akan diembuskan ke seluruh ruangan.

Air purifier banyak digunakan untuk membantu pernapasan orang yang menderita asma, alergi dan masalah pernapasan lain akibat debu dan polusi. Dalam kaitannya dengan pencegahan Covid-19, air purifier dipercaya dapat membantu mencegah penyebaran Covid-19 terutama jika digunakan dalam ruangan yang memiliki ventilasi yang buruk.

Sejumlah penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa air purifier yang dikengkapi filter HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) dapat menyaring virus Corona yang berukuran 0,1 mikron. HEPA filter dalam air purifier diklaim dapat menyaring partikel berukuran 0,1-0,3 mikron sehingga diharapkan penggunaan air purifier dengan HEPA filter dapat membantu mengedarkan udara yang lebih bersih dan aman dari virus Covid-19.

Agar penggunaan air purifier cukup efektif mencegah penyebaran virus Covid-19, filter perlu dibersihkan dan diganti secara rutin. Selain itu penggunaan air purifier juga perlu memerhatikan cakupan Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) yang berkaitan dengan luas ruangan.

Efektivitas kalung air purifier

Lalu, apakah kalung air purifier cukup efektif untuk menangkal virus Covid-19? Dilansir dari laman Smart Air Filter, sebuah studi dilakukan di China dan California untuk menguji efektivitas kalung air purifier dalam mencegah polusi dan penyebaran virus. Hasilnya, 3 dari 4 kalung air purifier mampu mengurangi kurang dari 10% partikel udara dalam jarak 20 cm di ruangan tertutup. Hasil ini dianggap tidak lebih baik dari proteksi yang diberikan dari menggunakan masker untuk mencegah penyebaran virus Covid-19.

Selain itu, sejumlah studi juga menyebutkan bahwa kalung air purifier dapat menghasilkan ozon yang berbahaya bagi paru-paru. Pasalnya, kalung air purifier umumnya mengandung ionizer, bukan filter HEPA. Kadar ozon yang dihasilkan dapat berbeda-beda tergantung dari merek dan jenis alat yang digunakan namun dilansir dari EPA, kandungan ini tetap berbahaya bagi pernapasan manusia.

Tetap patuhi protokol kesehatan

WHO mengungkapkan pentingnya sirkulasi udara yang baik untuk mencegah penularan Covid-19. Untuk penggunaan AC dianjurkan mengatur AC yang memungkinkan pertukaran dengan udara luar untuk mengurangi sirkulasi ulang udara di dalam ruangan. Sedangkan air purifier dengan HEPA filter juga aman digunakan asalkan sesuai dengan cakupan CADR pada masing-masing ruangan.

Namun, untuk melindungi diri dari penyebaran virus Covid-19, WHO tetap merekomendasikan untuk mematuhi protokol kesehatan seperti menggunakan masker, menjaga jarak, menghindari kerumunan, rajin mencuci tangan dengan sabun serta mendapatkan vaksin Covid-19 dalam dosis lengkap.
