Namun, para ahli menyatakan bahwa mencuci tangan dengan sabun lebih baik membunuh kuman jika dibandingkan dengan hand sanitizer. Bagaimana faktanya?

 

Kelebihan Mencuci Tangan dengan Sabun

Hand sanitizer adalah cairan atau gel pembunuh kuman berbasis alkohol. Sebelum pandemi, hand sanitizer banyak digunakan di fasilitas kesehatan untuk memudahkan para tenaga kesehatan mendisinfeksi diri sebelum bertemu pasien.

Hand sanitizer mengandung alkohol lebih dari 60% yang efektif untuk proses sanitasi dan disinfeksi kuman. Alkohol akan merusak bakteri dan virus dengan menghancurkan lapisan terluar mereka sehingga mereka tidak dapat mengambil alih inang.

Namun untuk virus dengan kulit yang keras, penggunaan hand sanitizer dianggap kurang efektif. Karenanya, para ahli tetap menganjurkan mencuci tangan dengan sabun dan air mengalir untuk membunuh kuman.

Kelebihan mencuci tangan dengan sabun dan air mengalir jika dibandingkan dengan penggunaan hand sanitizer antara lain:

1. Lebih Efektif Membunuh Virus

Para ahli sepakat bahwa cara terbaik menghilangkan kuman dari tangan adalah dengan mencuci tangan dengan air mengalir dan sabun. Saat sabun tercampur air, molekul sabun efektif untuk menghancurkan membran permukaan bakteri dan virus, termasuk virus Covid-19.

Gerakan saat menyabun dan menggosokkan tangan secara menyeluruh dapat membantu menyingirkan kotoran, minyak dan mikroba yang kemudian terbuang ke saluran pembuangan air.

2. Membunuh Lebih Banyak Kuman

Hand sanitizer memang ampuh untuk membersihkan tangan dalam situasi tertentu. Namun, untuk membunuh mikroba dengan baik diperlukan penggunaan hand sanitizer dalam jumlah tertentu.

Sedangkan mencuci tangan dengan sabun, hanya dengan menggunakan sedikit sabun dan air sudah dapat membunuh lebih banyak kuman dibandingkan dengan penggunaan hand sanitizer.

3. Lebih Efektif Membersihkan Minyak 

Salah satu kelebihan mencuci tangan dengan air sabun adalah sabun dapat mengurai minyak dengan lebih baik dibanding hand sanitizer. Saat beraktivitas, tangan mungkin akan terkena minyak dari keringat, kotoran wajah, makanan atau hal-hal lainnya.

Untuk membersihkannya, cuci tangan dengan sabun jauh lebih baik daripada menggunakan hand sanitizer yang berbasis alkohol.

4. Menghilangkan Zat Kimia Berbahaya

Meskipun hand sanitizer cukup ampuh dalam membasmi mikroba, namun alkohol tidak selalu mampu membersihkan tangan dari zat kimia berbahaya. Untuk zat kimia seperti pestisida, insektisida dan logam berat lainnya, cara terbaik untuk membersihkan tangan adalah dengan mencucinya dengan sabun dan air mengalir.

 

Tips Mencuci Tangan dengan Baik

Mencuci tangan dengan sabun lebih direkomendasikan untuk membersihkan kuman jika dibandingkan dengan penggunaan hand sanitizer. Namun cara apa pun yang Anda pilih jika dilakukan dengan teknik yang tidak tepat maka tidak akan optimal untuk membersihkan kuman.

Dilansir dari CDC, berikut ini teknik mencuci tangan yang tepat:

  • Basahi air dengan air bersih dan mengalir
  • Gosok tangan sabun selama 20 detik di seluruh permukaan tangan, sela jari hingga bawah kuku
  • Bilas hingga bersih menggunakan air bersih
  • Keringkan dengan handuk atau gunakan pengering

Selama mencuci tangan, pastikan seluruh permukaan tangan sudah terkena air dan sabun agar tangan terbebas dari kuman. Hindari menggosok tangan terlalu keras karena dapat menyebabkan iritasi.

Begitu juga dengan penggunaan hand sanitizer, pastikan hand sanitizer yang Anda gunakan mengandung alkohol lebih dari 60%. Hand sanitizer yang mengandung alkohol di bawah 60% kurang efektif dalam membunuh kuman.

Namun kandungan alkohol yang tinggi juga dapat menyebabkan kulit kering sehingga Anda perlu mengoleskan pelembap untuk menjaga kelembapan kulit. Saat menggunakan hand sanitizer, Anda juga perlu menggosok hand sanitizer ke seluruh permukaan tangan untuk membasmi kuman secara menyeluruh.
