Bad breath (halitosis) is usually harmless, yet it can seriously affect how you perform and interact. The problem often starts with bacteria in the mouth or throat. These microbes live on the teeth and feed on food particles that get stuck between them. As they break down debris, they release sulfur compounds that create an unpleasant smell.

Although about 90 percent of bad breath cases are linked to bacteria, halitosis can sometimes point to an underlying illness. According to Healthline, digestive infections, diabetes complications, kidney failure, or acid reflux may be reflected in persistent bad breath.

If bad breath keeps bothering you and does not improve with routine brushing and rinsing, visit a dentist for a test. Your dentist can determine whether the cause is bacterial or related to another condition.

Below are easy-to-find kitchen options for how to treat bad breath and how to overcome bad breath in mild cases.

Parsley

This bright green herb from the celery family has dense leaves and a natural deodorizing effect. Research suggests parsley can help neutralize the buildup of sulfur compounds that drive bad breath, which highlights the benefits of parsley.

Pineapple Juice

While researches have not confirmed it, many people report that drinking pineapple juice can give rapid relief from unpleasant breath.

Yogurt

Yogurt contains Lactobacillus, a probiotic that can curb harmful bacteria in the mouth and digestive tract that contribute to odor. Some research shows that many people improve their breath by consuming probiotics regularly.

Milk

Drinking milk can reduce odor quickly. Studies even indicate that the smell of onions may drop right after consuming milk.

Oranges

Oranges supply vitamin C, which research links to increased saliva flow. Saliva helps wash away the foul smell produced by oral bacteria.

Green Tea

Green tea offers disinfecting and deodorizing effects that can last for hours. You can add fresh mint leaves for extra freshness.

Apples

Studies have found that apples can blunt onion odors. Apples contain natural compounds that neutralize the unpleasant smell from onions, and these compounds may also help with general bad breath.

Baking Soda

Do not drink it. Instead, use baking soda as a mouth rinse. It helps reduce bacteria in the mouth, which in turn lowers odor. Mix 2 teaspoons of baking soda with 1 glass of warm water, then swish for 30 seconds.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar can also serve as a rinse. Apple cider vinegar creates a more acidic environment in the mouth, which is less friendly to odor-causing bacteria. Add 2 tablespoons to a glass of warm water and gargle for 30 seconds.

From these kitchen choices, which one would you like to try first for how to treat and manage bad breath?
