Seiring bertambahnya usia, lansia sering mengalami perubahan pada tubuh yang dapat memengaruhi keseimbangan. Kehilangan keseimbangan ini merupakan masalah serius karena dapat menyebabkan jatuh yang berisiko cedera, patah tulang atau bahkan trauma kepala.

Hilangnya keseimbangan sering kali merupakan gejala kondisi kesehatan tertentu. Penting untuk mengetahui penyebab kehilangan keseimbangan pada lansia agar dapat mencegah jatuh dan cedera, serta memperbaiki kualitas hidup sehari-hari.

Penyebab Umum Lansia Kehilangan Keseimbangan

Perubahan keseimbangan lansia bisa disebabkan oleh banyak faktor, di antaranya:

Perubahan tekanan darah mendadak

Perubahan tekanan darah mendadak sangat umum dialami lansia, misalnya ketika berdiri terlalu cepat atau melakukan gerakan tiba-tiba. Tekanan darah dapat turun secara mendadak, yang dikenal sebagai hipotensi ortostatik.

Ini dapat menyebabkan pusing dan kehilangan keseimbangan sementara. Gejalanya akan mereda saat tekanan darah kembali normal.

Untuk mencegah hal ini, menghindari perubahan posisi tiba-tiba perlu dilakukan dan menjaga asupan cairan tubuh yang cukup.

Kurangnya sirkulasi

Seiring bertambahnya usia, jantung dan pembuluh darah menjadi kurang efisien dalam memompa darah. Akibatnya, sirkulasi darah ke otak, otot atau organ akan melambat dan menyebabkan kehilangan keseimbangan.

Olahraga teratur, diet sehat serta pemeriksaan kesehatan rutin dapat membantu meningkatkan sirkulasi dan kesehatan kardiovaskular.

Kondisi neurologis

Kondisi kesehatan seperti Parkinson dan multiple sklerosis dapat memengaruhi koordinasi, kontrol gerakan dan keseimbangan. Lansia dengan masalah kesehatan tersebut memiliki risiko lebih tinggi dalam kesulitan menjaga keseimbangan, sehingga sering kali lebih mudah jatuh.

Kadar zat besi yang rendah

Kadar zat besi yang rendah dapat menyebabkan anemia yang mengakibatkan kurangnya sel darah merah yang membawa oksigen ke seluruh tubuh. Anemia sendiri sering ditandai dengan sakit kepala, kelelahan dan kelemahan yang meningkatkan risiko kehilangan keseimbangan.

Selain mengonsumsi makanan kaya zat besi seperti daging merah, sayuran hijau, dan kacang-kacangan, melakukan pemeriksaan kadar zat besi dan suplementasi zat besi juga diperlukan.

Gula darah rendah

Lansia yang menderita diabetes dan menggunakan insulin, bisa mengalami gula darah rendah yang menyebabkan pusing, keringat berlebihan, serta kecemasan. Semua gejala ini menyebabkan kehilangan keseimbangan.

Efek samping obat

Banyak obat seperti obat anti kejang, antidepresan, dan obat penenang dapat menyebabkan pusing yang dapat memperburuk masalah keseimbangan. Anda perlu mendiskusikannya kembali dengan dokter mengenai risiko dan efek samping obat yang sedang dikonsumsi, sehingga dokter bisa mengganti obat atau menyesuaikan dosisnya.

Penurunan kekuatan otot dan sendi

Kekuatan otot dan fleksibilitas sendi juga berkurang seiring bertambahnya usia. Kehilangan massa otot dan penurunan elastisitas sendi membuat lansia sulit mempertahankan stabilitas tubuh.

Kelemahan otot kaki dan punggung misalnya, membuat lansia lebih rentan untuk terjatuh. Kondisi ini juga sering diperparah dengan kurangnya aktivitas fisik atau kondisi medis yang membatasi pergerakan seperti radang sendi.
