How It Works

Cefditoren pivoxil is a member of the cephalosporin antibiotic class. It works by eliminating the bacteria responsible for causing infections.

Indications

Cefditoren pivoxil is prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), skin infections, throat infections, and tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils).

Contraindications

This medication should not be used by individuals with a known allergy to cefditoren pivoxil or other cephalosporin antibiotics.

Side Effects

• Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headaches. If these symptoms persist or become more severe, contact your doctor immediately.
• Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following serious side effects: unusual bruising or bleeding, extreme tiredness, mood or mental changes (such as confusion), seizures, symptoms of kidney issues (like changes in urine output), symptoms of liver disorders (such as persistent nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine), signs of infection (such as a persistent sore throat, fever, or chills), swelling of the feet or ankles, sudden and unexplained weight gain, muscle weakness, excessive thirst or urination, symptoms of low blood sugar (such as excessive sweating, shaking, rapid heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling in the hands or feet).
• This medication may cause a severe intestinal issue caused by a bacterium called Clostridium difficile. This condition can occur either during the treatment or weeks or months after it ends. If you experience diarrhea that doesn't stop, stomach cramps or pain, or notice blood or mucus in your stool, contact your doctor right away.
• Long-term or repeated use of cefditoren pivoxil may lead to oral and vaginal yeast infections. If you notice white patches in your mouth, unusual vaginal discharge, or other signs of a yeast infection, inform your doctor.

Types

Cefditoren pivoxil is available in both tablet and caplet forms.

Dosage

Pharyngitis, Tonsillitis, and Uncomplicated Skin Infections

• Adults: 200 mg twice a day for 10 days.

Pneumonia

• Adults: 400 mg twice a day for 14 days.

Chronic Bronchitis

• Adults: 400 mg twice a day for 10 days.

Safety

• Cefditoren pivoxil may reduce the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines (such as the typhoid vaccine). Inform your healthcare provider that you are taking this medication before receiving any vaccinations or immunizations.

• During pregnancy, this drug should only be used if necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

• It is uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

• Taking cefditoren pivoxil with antacids may reduce its absorption.
• Probenecid (used to lower uric acid) can increase blood levels of cefditoren pivoxil.
