Pneumonia remains one of the most common respiratory infections in Indonesia and can be a serious health threat. According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, pneumonia is the top cause of death among children under five years old.

Fortunately, there are now several vaccines available that can help protect against pneumonia. What are these vaccines? Find out in the article below.

Types of Pneumonia Vaccines in Indonesia

Pneumonia is a lung infection that leads to inflammation in the air sacs of one or both lungs. This condition can be caused by different microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

To help prevent pneumonia or reduce its severity, multiple vaccines are now accessible in Indonesia. Here are some of the available options:

PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine)

The PCV vaccine is designed to protect against several strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, the bacteria most commonly responsible for pneumonia.

PCV is administered as follows:

  • For infants: Given at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, with a booster between 12 and 15 months

  • For adults and the elderly: A single dose is recommended, especially for people over 50 or those with chronic health conditions or weakened immune systems

Several versions of the PCV vaccine are used in Indonesia, including PCV10, PCV13, PCV15, and PCV21. Each type protects against a different number of pneumococcal strains.

1. PCV10 (10-valent)

Covers 10 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Often used in childhood immunization programs.

2. PCV13 (13-valent)

Offers protection against 13 strains, including all those in PCV10 plus three additional types. Suitable for children, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

3. PCV15 (15-valent)

Provides defense against 15 strains, expanding on the coverage of PCV13. It is tailored more for adults and vulnerable groups, and is now available in several countries, including Indonesia.

4. PCV21 (21-valent)

The most comprehensive option currently available, PCV21 protects against 21 pneumococcal strains. It's designed to offer broader protection for adults and those at high risk. While still relatively new, its potential to reduce pneumococcal disease is promising.

PPV Vaccine (PPV Vaccine)Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine)

The PPV23 vaccine contains 23 different pneumococcal strains. It is generally recommended for people aged 65 and older, as well as those with health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, asthma, HIV, or immune system disorders.

This vaccine is typically given once, but depending on the individual’s risk level, a doctor may advise a booster dose after a few years.

Vaccines are an effective way to lower the risk of pneumonia or reduce the severity of infection. To get the best protection, make sure you follow the recommended vaccine schedule based on your age and health status.

Consult with your healthcare provider to determine which vaccine suits your needs best. You can also access medical consultation through the Ai Care app, available for download from the App Store or Play Store.
