How It Works
Lanolin is a yellowish fat derived from sheep's wool. It works by forming a protective, oily layer on the skin's surface, which helps prevent water loss, keeping the skin moisturized. Lanolin is commonly used as an emollient to soften and smooth the skin.
Indications
Lanolin is used to prevent and treat dry, itchy, or irritated skin. It is especially beneficial for treating sore nipples in breastfeeding mothers. Additionally, it can be used to manage diaper eczema in babies.
Contraindications
Individuals with a history of allergies or hypersensitivity to lanolin or sheep's wool (such as hives or swollen eyelids) should avoid using this product.
Side Effects
Lanolin is generally safe for external use on the skin. However, if side effects occur, they are usually allergic reactions such as hives, skin rashes, and swelling of the eyelids
Types
Lanolin is available in cream and baby oil forms.
Dosage
Lanolin can be applied 1-2 times daily to the affected area of the skin. The amount used should be adjusted based on the severity of the condition or the area being treated.
Safety
Pregnancy:
Lanolin is classified as FDA Category C (animal studies have shown potential adverse effects on the fetus, but no well-controlled studies in humans are available). Therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor and weigh the risks and benefits before using lanolin during pregnancy.
Drug Interactions
There are no significant clinical reports or evidence of drug interactions when lanolin is used alongside other medications.
