Do enlarged pores affect your confidence? And are you unsure how to address them? Here is a guide for you.

Beyond acne and signs of aging, prominent pores are a frequent concern for many people. While makeup can camouflage them, having large pores can sometimes chip away at self-confidence.

Pore size is largely influenced by genetics; some individuals naturally have tiny pores, while others have larger openings that are easy to see. Pores are essential for skin health. Each pore is the opening of a hair follicle that houses an oil gland producing sebum, an oil that lubricates pores and helps maintain skin moisture. When the brain senses the skin is dry, the sebaceous glands release oil and deliver it through the pores.

There is likely no way to completely erase or remove large pores, but there are several dermatologist-recommended steps to make them look smaller and keep them from getting clogged:

Step 1: Choose non-comedogenic skincare and makeup

The American Academy of Dermatology Association advises selecting skincare and makeup that are labeled non-comedogenic. Non-comedogenic indicates the products avoid ingredients that can block pores and make them appear larger.

In addition, as reported by Medical News Today, opt for products that are oil-free and water-based. People with large pores often have oily skin, and using oil-based products can allow more buildup, leaving pores more congested and more noticeable.

Step 2: Cleanse your face twice daily

Pores filled with excess oil, dust, and debris can appear larger and more obvious. Washing your face two times a day helps clear out pores, prevent new blockages, and cut down on oil and grime. Here are some cleansing pointers:

  • Use a gel cleanser suitable for oily or combination skin that helps minimize the look of pores. Steer clear of oil- or alcohol-based cleansers that can irritate skin.
  • Avoid hot water, which can irritate and make pores look more prominent; use lukewarm or cool water instead.
  • Do not scrub areas with large pores, since friction can trigger inflammation and make pores look bigger.
  • Pick a gentle, mild-face wash that does not irritate or clog pores.

Step 3: Use retinol

If you have oily or combination skin with mild acne and visible pores, dermatologists often suggest skincare containing retinol or retinyl palmitate. Because these ingredients can also irritate, apply them at night. First cleanse, then allow skin to dry for at least 30 minutes. After that, apply the retinol by gently patting it onto the skin.

Step 4: Apply sunscreen

Unprotected sun exposure can damage skin and make pores appear larger. Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 whenever you are in direct sunlight.

Step 5: Exfoliate

Exfoliation matters because routine cleansing may not remove every layer of dead skin cells. For exfoliating care, your doctor may recommend products containing beta hydroxy acid, polyhydroxy acid, or mandelic acid.

The steps above may ease your skin concerns, but it is wise to consult your doctor before trying products that claim to shrink pores. Using suitable, safe products can improve your symptoms while minimizing side effects or other skin issues.
