How It Works

Povidone iodine is an active ingredient of antiseptics used to prevent infection in wounds from falls, cuts, and surgical procedures. Its broad antibacterial activities arise from a complex formed with povidone that releases iodine to kill microbes.

Indications

This medicine is used to treat oral and throat infections, and it is also used for ongoing oral hygiene treatments. Povidone iodine is also applied as a topical antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection during certain medical procedures.

Contraindication

Povidone iodine is contraindicated in people with a history of thyroid disorders, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, endemic goiter, and nodular colloid goiter.

Side Effects

Side effects of povidoe iodine are uncommon. Possible adverse reactions include irritation of the oral mucosa, localized burning sensation, hives, blisters, itchiness, hypopigmented or white skin patches, skin peeling, redness, swelling, pain, or other signs of irritation.
