How It Works

Aminophylline acts as a bronchodilator, relaxing the lower airways (the bronchi) and improving airflow to the lungs. It works by inhibiting the phosphodiesterase enzyme in the body, which helps smooth the passage of air through the respiratory system.

 

Indications

Aminophylline is used to treat conditions involving reversible airway obstruction, including severe acute asthma and chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

 

Contraindications

Aminophylline should not be used in individuals with acute porphyria and those using medications like ephedrine concurrently. Patients with heart disease or kidney disorders should use it with caution.

 

Side Effects

Potential side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions or hypersensitivity (such as hives or swelling of the eyelids)

  • Seizures

  • Irregular heart rhythm

  • Stomach ulcers

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

 

Types

  • 200 mg film-coated tablets

  • 24 mg/mL injection (available by prescription)

 

Dosage

  • Adults: 100–300 mg, 3–4 times daily

  • Children aged 6 years and older: 10 mg/kg, twice daily

It is recommended to take aminophylline on an empty stomach, ideally 1–2 hours before meals. Always consult your doctor before using this medication to minimize potential side effects.

 

Safety

Pregnancy:

Aminophylline is classified as FDA Category C (animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, but there are no well-controlled studies in humans). It is important to consider the potential benefits and risks, and use it with caution during pregnancy.

 

Drug Interactions

Anti-seizure medications (such as phenytoin and carbamazepine)

When used alongside aminophylline, these medications can lower aminophylline levels in the body.
