Kulit kering atau yang disebut juga xerosis bukanlah penyakit berbahaya. Kulit kering seringkali disebabkan oleh kondisi lingkungan sekitar seperti cuaca, suhu udara, penggunaan sabun dan lain sebagainya. Tanpa perawatan, kulit kering tidak akan membahayakan jiwa, namun lambat laun dapat menyebabkan eksim atau meningkatkan risiko infeksi akibat kulit pecah-pecah yang menjadi jalan masuk bagi kuman.

Penyebab kulit kering

Faktor lingkungan adalah yang faktor utama yang menyebabkan kulit kering. Dilansir Mayo Clinic dan Medical News Today, berikut adalah penyebab kulit kering:

  • Cuaca - kulit cenderung kering saat suhu udara dingin dan tingkat kelembaban menurun
  • Suhu panas - suhu panas akibat pemanas ruangan, perapian, dan lain sebagainya dapat mengurangi kelembaban dan membuat kulit kering
  • Mandi air panas - berendam dalam waktu lama atau seringkali mandi dengan air panas juga dapat membuat kulit kehilangan kelembabannya
  • Formula sabun dan deterjen - formula yang keras pada sabun, deterjen dan sampo yang digunakan dapat menghilangkan kelembaban kulit karena formulanya bekerja menghilangkan minyak di kulit
  • Paparan zat kimia dari sabun atau klorin di air kolam renang
  • Terlalu sering membersihkan kulit
  • Diabetes
  • Hipotiroidisme
  • Kebiasaan merokok
  • Paparan sinar matahari langsung yang berlebihan
  • Kondisi penyakit kulit seperti dermatitis atopik, dermatitis seboroik, dan psoriasis

Cara mengatasi kulit kering

Karena lingkungan adalah faktor utama yang menyebabkan kulit kering, ahli dermatologi memberikan rekomendasi untuk mengembalikan kelembaban kulit dengan cara sebagai berikut:

  • Menurunkan suhu air ketika mandi
  • Membatasi waktu mandi setidaknya 5-10 menit saja
  • Menggunakan sabun, sampo dengan formula yang ringan
  • Menggunakan moisturizer (pelembab) setelah mandi
  • Menggunakan salep atau krim daripada losion yang terbukti lebih memberikan kelembaban pada kulit. Menurut American Academy of Dermatology Association, berikut adalah beberapa bahan yang dapat melembabkan kulit dengan baik:
    • Jojoba oil
    • Dimethicone
    • Glycerin
    • Hyaluronic acid
    • Lactic acid
    • Lanolin
    • Mineral oil
    • Petrolatum
    • Shea butter
  • Menggunakan produk skincare dengan label fragrance-free yang lebih cocok digunakan untuk kulit sensitif dan kulit kering
  • Menggunakan lip balm untuk melembabkan kulit bibir
  • Menggunakan pakaian yang menyerap keringat dan mencucinya dengan deterjen yang berlabel hypoallergenic
  • Menggunakan humidifier yang dapat menjaga kelembaban ruangan
  • Pastikan untuk selalu mandi dengan sabun dan air bersih setelah berenang untuk menghilangkan klorin yang menempel di kulit
  • Menghindari produk perawatan kulit, deterjen atau sabun yang mengandung bahan yang dapat mengiritasi dan membuat kulit kering seperti dilansir Medical News Today berikut:
    • sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
    • petroleum dan parafin
    • paraben
    • diethanolamine (DEA)
    • monoethanolamine (MEA)
    • triethanolamine (TEA)
