Normalnya orang dewasa membutuhkan waktu sekitar 7-8 jam tidur setiap hari untuk menjaga kesehatannya. Meskipun tidur sangat penting bagi kesejahteraan fisik dan mental, tidur berlebihan (oversleeping) justru dapat menyebabkan berbagai masalah kesehatan.

 

Kapan Tidur Disebut Oversleeping

Oversleeping atau tidur berlebihan, mengacu pada tidur lebih dari 9 jam dalam periode 24 jam. Kondisi ini juga disebut hipersomnia, yang ditandai dengan tidur siang berlebihan sepanjang hari, rasa kantuk yang parah sepanjang hari, dan juga sakit kepala.

Meskipun jumlah tidur yang dibutuhkan setiap orang bisa berbeda-beda, tidur berlebihan dapat membuat Anda justru merasa lesu dan sulit untuk fokus, padahal seharusnya tidur yang cukup dapat meningkatkan kesehatan dan kewaspadaan mental secara keseluruhan.

 

Penyebab Oversleeping

Salah satu penyebab oversleeping yang paling umum dan tidak berkaitan dengan kondisi kesehatan adalah "utang tidur". Ini biasanya terjadi ketika Anda bergadang karena suatu hal kemudian keesokannya Anda merasa perlu tidur lebih lama untuk mengimbangi kekurangan tidur sebelumnya.

Selain "utang tidur", oversleeping mungkin terkait dengan kondisi kesehatan, di antaranya:

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea adalah kondisi di mana Anda mengalami gangguan pernapasan selama tidur. Ini terjadi ketika saluran napas terhalang sementara sehingga napas mungkin sangat dangkal atau berhenti sejenak.

Dalam beberapa kasus, sleep apnea dapat menyebabkan berhenti napas sepenuhnya yang kemudian diikuti periode bangun untuk memulihkan pernapasan normal. Akibat terganggunya tidur selama sleep apnea, Anda mungkin merasa lebih mengantuk dan lelah di siang hari. Untuk menebus rasa kantuk tersebut Anda cenderung tidur lebih lama di siang hari dan menyebabkan oversleeping.

Narkolepsi

Narkolepsi adalah gangguan tidur kronis yang ditandai kecenderungan tertidur secara tiba-tiba, bahkan di tengah aktivitas sehari-hari. Walaupun orang dengan narkolepsi sering tertidur secara tiba-tiba, kualitas tidur mereka di malam hari sering kali terganggu. Ini dapat menyebabkan kelelahan dan keinginan untuk tidur lebih lama lagi.

Idiopatik hipersomnia

Idiopatik hipersomnia adalah gangguan tidur kronis yang ditandai kecenderungan mengalami kantuk dan tidur yang berlebihan walaupun sudah cukup tidur di malam hari. Dengan adanya gangguan tidur ini, Anda mungkin bisa tidur 14-18 jam dalam sehari.

Depresi dan kecemasan

Depresi dan kecemasan sering kali menyebabkan gangguan tidur termasuk tidur berlebihan. Saat Anda merasa depresi atau cemas berlebihan, ini akan menguras energi dan motivasi Anda. Anda menjadi merasa sangat lelah secara fisik dan mental sehingga merasa perlu tidur lebih lama.
