Sakit telinga bisa menyerang salah satu telinga atau keduanya. Penyebab utama sakit telinga umumnya adalah adanya infeksi yang disebabkan penyumbatan saluran atau bakteri dan virus.

Dilansir Healthline, ada beberapa gejala yang bisa diamati saat seseorang sakit telinga:

  • Rasa nyeri di telinga
  • Pendengaran berkurang
  • Adanya cairan yang keluar dari telinga
  • Pada anak-anak, gejala tersebut bisa disertai:
  • Demam
  • Telinga terasa penuh
  • Sulit tidur
  • Sering menarik daun telinga
  • Menangis tak henti dan rewel
  • Sakit kepala
  • Kehilangan keseimbangan
  • Kehilangan napsu makan

Beberapa penyebab sakit telinga:

  • Infeksi telinga (otitis media)

Bisa terjadi di luar, bagian tengah atau bagian terdalam saluran telinga.

  • Infeksi telinga bagian luar

Disebabkan karena adanya air yang tak sengaja masuk ke dalam telinga, atau adanya bakteri yang disebabkan air kolam yang kotor. Sering menggunakan cotton bud, memasukkan jari ke telinga, atau penggunaan headphone terlalu lama.

  • Infeksi telinga bagian tengah

Infeksi ini bisa disebabkan infeksi pernapasan yang menyebabkan air berkumpul di bagian gendang telinga dan menjadi tempat berkumpulnya bakteri.

  • Labyrinthitis

Gangguan sakit pada telinga yang disebabkan infeksi bakteri atau virus dari saluran pernapasan.

Untuk meredakan nyeri atau rasa sakitnya, Anda bisa mengonsumsi acetaminophen, aspirin atau ibuprofen. Namun, jika tidak ada obat pereda nyeri, Anda bisa mencoba beberapa alternatif perawatan berikut, seperti dilansir Medical News Today:

Menggunakan kompres

Anda bisa mencoba kompres bagian yang belakang telinga baik dengan air hangat maupun dingin.

Kompres air hangat (hotpad) dapat mengurangi peradangan dan nyeri di telinga. Anda bisa meletakkan di bagian leher atau tenggorokan.

Kompres air dingin (cold pack) bermanfaat mengurangi nyeri di telinga. Letakkan di bagian bawah telinga selama 20 menit.

Pijatan lembut

Pijatan lembut di area gigi dan rahang dapat meredakan ketegangan otot di kepala. Pijat dengan gerakan melingkar dan lembut, gerakan ini bermanfaat mengeringkan cairan yang ada di dalam telinga.

Mengonsumsi bawang putih

Mengunyah bawang putih mentah dapat membantu meringankan sakit telinga. Bawang putih mengandung antibiotik dan antimikroba yang dapat mencegah infeksi memburuk.

Mengunyah permen karet

Meredakan otot-otot yang tegang di area telinga Anda bisa mengunyah permen karet agar kembali rileks sehingga sakitnya mereda.

Saat sakit telinga, gunakan earplug saat mandi untuk mencegah air masuk ke dalam telinga, yang akan semakin memperburuk kondisi telinga.

Bila kondisi tak membaik selama 24-48 jam dan Anda mengalami demam tinggi di atas 38 derajat, segera cari pertolongan medis untuk mencegah perburukan.
