Have you ever realized that picking underwear isn’t just about size and design? In fact, underwear choices can also influence the health of your intimate area.
You may have heard of vaginitis before. According to WebMD, vaginitis is an inflammation that develops when the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted. This condition may result from bacteria, yeast, viruses, chemical irritants from soaps, and even underwear.
This means choosing the right underwear is more important than many people think. As explained by Healthline, there are certain guidelines for selecting and caring for underwear that may directly affect your health.
Choose Cotton Underwear
The most recommended fabric for underwear is cotton. Cotton helps absorb sweat and moisture while remaining cool and gentle on the skin, lowering the chance of yeast infections. “The vulva is a delicate area, similar to the lips on your face, so it should be treated with care,” explained Dr. Alyse Kelly-Jones. She added, “Because the vagina is moist and soft like the inside of the mouth, underwear should be breathable and absorbent.”
In contrast, synthetic fabrics such as nylon and spandex are less breathable, preventing proper airflow. They can increase the risk of yeast infections and may cause heat and discomfort.
Change Underwear Regularly
Always replace your underwear when it becomes damp with sweat or discharge. While panty liners can make you feel dry, frequent use may actually lead to irritation.
Wash with Hypoallergenic Detergent
Since the vaginal area is highly sensitive, it’s better to wash underwear with hypoallergenic detergent. This reduces the risk of itching, irritation, or allergic reactions.
Replace Underwear Once a Year
It’s a good idea to renew your underwear collection yearly, as underwear is used daily. Even with regular washing, research from the Good Housekeeping Institute reveals that clean-looking underwear can still carry up to 10,000 bacteria.
Wash Separately from Other Laundry
Try to wash underwear apart from other clothes to reduce the possibility of bacterial transmission.
Sun-Dry for Maximum Cleanliness
Drying underwear under direct sunlight can help eliminate certain bacteria. Additionally, ironing underwear at a low temperature may also help decrease bacteria levels.
