How It Works
Allylestrenol is a medication commonly prescribed to help prevent miscarriage caused by low progesterone levels in the body. It works by imitating the natural hormone progesterone, triggering its hormonal effects to support progesterone production. This helps sustain pregnancy and reduces the risk of uterine contractions.
Indications
Medical conditions treated with allylestrenol include threatened miscarriage, recurrent miscarriage, and premature labor.
Contraindications
Contraindications to the use of allylestrenol include history of hypersensitivity or allergy to allylestrenol and liver disorders.
Side Effects
Side effects are uncommon, but in some cases may include blurred vision, double vision, migraine headaches, nausea, or vomiting.
Types
Allylestrenol is available as 5 mg tablets.
Dosage
Prevention of abortion or threatened miscarriage
Adults: 5 mg three times daily for 5–7 days. Treatment may be extended if needed, and the dose can be reduced gradually as miscarriage symptoms improve.
Prevention of recurrent abortion or miscarriage
Adults: 5–10 mg daily, starting as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Treatment is continued for at least 1 month after the critical period.
Prevention of premature labor
Adults: The dose is adjusted individually based on medical advice, with a maximum of 40 mg daily.
Safety

FDA Category N (the potential risk to the fetus is not clearly established). Use should be done only under a doctor’s supervision.
Drug Interactions
