How it Works
Calcium supplements work by helping maintain sufficient calcium levels in the body. Calcium plays an essential role in keeping bones and teeth healthy, supporting the nervous system, enabling blood clotting, and aiding in muscle contractions.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia), cardiac arrest, or toxicity in heart cells caused by excess potassium or magnesium.
Contraindications
Some conditions where calcium supplements should not be used include:

High calcium levels

A history of allergy or hypersensitivity to calcium gluconate (such as hives or swelling of the face and eyelids)

Sarcoidosis
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, decreased appetite, dry throat.
Types
500 mg tablets
Dosage
To prevent calcium deficiency, the dosage is adjusted based on daily nutritional requirements, as follows:

Infants aged 0–5 months: 200 mg

Children aged 6–11 months: 270 mg

Children aged 1–3 years: 650 mg

Children aged 4–9 years: 1000 mg
-
Children aged 10–18 years: 1200 mg
-
Adults aged 19–49 years: 1000 mg
-
Adults aged 50 years and over: 1200 mg
-
Pregnant and breastfeeding women: 1200 mg
To simplify, the following are the recommended dosages for preventing calcium deficiency:

Adults: 1–2 tablets, three times daily

Children: 1 tablet, two to three times daily
Safety
Pregnancy:
FDA Category C (animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans). The potential benefits and risks must be carefully considered, and the drug should be used with caution in pregnant women.
Drug Interactions

High blood pressure medications, such as thiazide diuretics (chlorothiazide).

Concurrent use may raise the risk of side effects, such as milk-alkali syndrome, a dangerous condition.

High blood pressure medications, such as calcium channel blockers (nifedipine, verapamil, diltiazem).

Concurrent use may lower the effectiveness of calcium channel blockers.
