Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation of height and weight measurements to describe health conditions related to height and weight. From the BMI calculation, you can know whether your weight is normal, overweight (excess body fat) or obese (a more severe level of excess fat).

Normal Body Mass Index (BMI)

A person is considered healthy and has a normal BMI when the calculation results show a number between 18.5 and 25. It should be noted that BMI calculation is not a test that determines whether you are healthy or not. There are a series of other tests that need to be done regarding certain health conditions.

A high BMI calculation result has a close correlation with overweight and obesity, which increases the risk of certain diseases. People who are overweight and obese tend to have health risks, including:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sleep apnea
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Bladder disease
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Low quality of life
  • High cholesterol
  • Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety
  • Decreased physical body function

While the results of BMI calculations below normal numbers also indicate certain health risks. People who weigh below normal according to BMI calculations are also at risk for several diseases, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Depression
  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Osteoporosis
  • Immunocompromise

How to Calculate Body Mass Index (BMI)

To find out your Body Mass Index (BMI), you need to know your weight and height. Then, from that information, you can use the following formula:

BMI Calculation
body weight (kg) : (height (m) x height (m))

BMI assessment information:

  • Underweight: if the result is less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: if the result is between 18.5 and 24.9
  • Overweight: if the result is between 25.0 and 29.9
  • Obesity: if the result is higher than 30

The Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation app makes it easy to calculate in a practical way. You don't need to calculate manually because you just need to enter the numbers in the columns that are already available according to the instructions.

If your BMI indicates obesity or being underweight, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance. If you need medical advice, you can visit a doctor in person or use the consultation features available in the Ai Care application. Download the Ai Care app from the App Store or Play Store for convenient access to medical consultations.
