Sebagian besar bayi memiliki kebiasaan mengisap jempol yang terus berkembang hingga usia anak-anak. Meskipun kebiasaan ini tidak berbahaya, namun dapat mengganggu pertumbuhan gigi dan tulang rahang. Cara Menghentikan Kebiasaan Anak Mengisap Jempol

Untuk menghentikan kebiasaan anak mengisap jempol, orang tua bisa melakukannya sejak dini. Beberapa cara yang bisa dilakukan antara lain:

Batasi kebiasaan mengisap jempol

Jika si kecil menunjukkan tanda-tanda suka mengisap jempol, sebaiknya Anda tidak melarangnya atau berusaha menghentikan kebiasaan tersebut saat itu juga. Cara ini akan menyebabkan anak merasa trauma karena dilarang dan justru akan semakin sulit berhenti dari kebiasaan tersebut.

Sebaiknya, hindari konfrontasi dengan anak ketika ia mulai mengisap jempol. Anda bisa memberi batasan dengan membolehkan anak untuk mengisap jempol namun hanya bisa dilakukan saat di rumah atau sebelum tidur.

Buat perjanjian dengan anak bahwa ia tidak boleh mengisap jempol ketika berada di luar rumah atau tempat umum. Dengan cara ini, anak dapat perlahan-lahan menghentikan kebiasaan tersebut.

Jelaskan efek samping mengisap jempol

Anda bisa menjelaskan efek samping mengisap jempol pada anak seperti berbicara cadel atau gigi tonggos yang membuat anak perlu melakukan perawatan tambahan untuk merapikan posisi gigi. Amati kebiasaan anak

Anda bisa mengamati, kapan anak akan mengisap jempol. Apakah hanya dilakukan menjelang tidur, ketika cemas atau takut, atau ketika ia melakukannya sewaktu-waktu tanpa sebab yang jelas. 

Jika ia melakukannya menjelang tidur, Anda bisa menawarkan cara lain untuk membuatnya lebih tenang seperti minum susu hangat atau membacakan dongeng sebelum tidur untuk membuatnya nyaman.
