How It Works
Tolnaftate is a synthetic antifungal medication classified as a thiocarbamate. It works by preventing the growth of dermatophyte fungi, including species like Epidermophyton, Mycosporum, Trichophyton, and Malassezia furfur. However, it is ineffective against Candida species or bacterial infections.
Indications
Tolnaftate is commonly used to treat skin infections caused by dermatophytes, such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), groin infections (tinea cruris), and ringworm infection (tinea corporis).
Contraindications
Tolnaftate should not be used by individuals with a history of allergy to the drug.
Side Effects
- While side effects are rare, some users may experience irritation, itching, or a burning sensation at the application site. If these symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to consult your doctor.
- A very serious allergic reaction to tolnaftate is uncommon but may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience rash, swelling or itching, particularly of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
Types
Tolnaftate is available in various forms, including gel, cream, powder and spray.
Dosage
- For the 1% gel, cream, or powder, apply a thin layer to the affected skin area. If using the spray form, apply directly to the infected skin. The typical treatment duration is 2 weeks for tinea cruris (groin infection) and 4 weeks for tinea corporis (body ringworm) and tinea pedis (athlete’s foot).
- For children over the age of 2, the dosage is the same as for adults.
Directions for use:
-
Apply the medication only to the affected skin areas. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the medication. Clean and dry the area to be treated before application. Apply the medication to the affected skin, usually twice daily, or as directed by your doctor or the package instructions.
-
Some forms of tolnaftate (such as the powder) may need to be shaken before use, so check the package insert for specific instructions. Apply enough medication to cover the affected area and its surrounding skin. Do not wrap, cover, or bandage the area unless advised by your doctor.
-
Avoid applying the medication to the eyes, nose, mouth, or vaginal areas.
-
Use the medication regularly, ideally at the same time each day, to achieve the best results.
Safety
- Before using tolnaftate, inform your doctor if you have a medical history of immune system disorders (e.g., HIV, organ transplant) and diabetes.
- Pregnancy: Tolnaftate should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- Breastfeeding: It is not known if tolnaftate passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before using this medication while breastfeeding.
Drug Interactions
There are currently no known interactions between tolnaftate and other medications when used together.
