How it Works
Ciclopirox is an antifungal medication. It works by stopping the growth of fungi that cause infections, especially in the nails.
Indications
Ciclopirox is prescribed to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails.
Contraindications
This medicine should not be used in people with a history of allergy to ciclopirox.
Side Effects

Some side effects that may occur include redness, burning around the nail, or changes in the color and shape of the nail. If these effects continue or get worse, contact your doctor immediately.

More serious side effects may include blistering, swelling, or pus discharge from the nail. Medical attention should be sought right away if these occur.

Although rare, severe allergic reactions may happen. Seek emergency help if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
Types
Ciclopirox is available in liquid form (similar to nail polish). It is for external use only and applied directly to fingernails or toenails.
Dosage
Apply ciclopirox to the affected fingernail or toenail once daily.
Safety

Before starting treatment with ciclopirox, inform your doctor if you have a medical history of diabetes and nerve damage in the fingers or toes (such as diabetic neuropathy)

Apply ciclopirox only to the nail and the surrounding skin. Avoid spreading the liquid to other areas of the skin or body, especially around the eyes, nose, mouth, or genital area.

Do not use nail polish or other nail cosmetics while using ciclopirox.

Avoid getting the nails wet for at least 8 hours after application.

Ciclopirox is flammable, so do not use it near heat sources or open flames, such as cigarettes.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is not yet known whether ciclopirox passes into breast milk. Consult a doctor before using this medication while breastfeeding.
Drug Interactions
There is no clear evidence of interactions between ciclopirox and other medications. However, always inform your doctor if you are using ointments, creams, or other products applied to the nails.
