How It Works

Bromazepam is part of the benzodiazepine class of medications, which affect the brain and nervous system to produce a calming effect. It works by enhancing the effects of a natural chemical in the body called GABA.

Indications

Bromazepam is primarily used for the short-term treatment of anxiety disorders.

Contraindications

  • A history of allergy to bromazepam or other benzodiazepines

  • Myasthenia gravis (a condition where the immune system attacks the nerve-muscle junction, leading to muscle weakness)

  • Severe respiratory problems

  • Severe liver damage

Side Effects

  • Common side effects of bromazepam may include drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination or balance, headache, nausea, blurred vision, changes in sexual interests or disorders, constipation, heartburn, or changes in appetite. If these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Serious side effects may include:

    • Mental or mood changes (e.g., hallucinations, depression, suicidal thoughts)

    • Difficulty speaking

    • Vision problems

    • Unusual weakness

    • Difficulty walking

    • Memory problems

    • Signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat)

  • In rare cases, bromazepam can cause severe side effects, including jaundice, seizures, and slowed or shallow breathing.

  • Bromazepam can sometimes have the opposite effect and cause restlessness, irritability, violent behavior, confusion, excitement, and excessive talking. Inform your doctor if you experience any of these effects.

Types

Bromazepam is available in 3 mg tablet form.

Dosage

  • Adults: Initial dose is 6-18 mg per day in divided doses. Maximum dose is 60 mg per day.
  • Elderly: Maximum initial dose is 3 mg per day, in divided doses.

Safety

  • Bromazepam can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing any activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you are sure it is safe to do so. Alcohol should also be avoided while taking this medication.
  • Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the side effects of bromazepam, particularly dizziness and loss of balance, which increases the risk of falls. Consult your doctor about the risks and benefits of bromazepam if you are 65 or older. Lower doses are generally recommended for elderly patients, as higher doses may not be as effective and may lead to serious side effects.
  • In children, bromazepam may have the opposite effect and lead to restlessness, tremors, or mood changes. Always consult your doctor if you are considering this medication for a child.
  • Bromazepam is excreted in breast milk, but its effects on a nursing infant are unknown. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

Bromazepam can increase the risk of life-threatening breathing problems and coma when used in combination with certain medications, especially opiates like codeine, hydrocodone, fentanyl, hydromorphone, meperidine, methadone, morphine, oxycodone, and tramadol.
