How It Works
Atezolizumab is a medication frequently used in immunotherapy to treat cancers such as lung cancer (non-small cell carcinoma) and urinary tract cancer (urothelial carcinoma). It functions by acting as an antibody that binds to immune cells, triggering the release of certain chemicals that enhance the body's immune response to target and fight tumor cells.
Indications
Atezolizumab is indicated for the treatments of locally advanced to metastatic urothelial carcinoma and non-small cell lung carcinoma.
Contraindications
Atezolizumab should not be used by individuals who have a history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to the drug.
Side Effects
While side effects are rare, some individuals may experience the following:

Types
Atezolizumab is available in the following preparation:

1200 mg injection solution
Dosage
- For urothelial carcinoma
Adult dosage: 1.2 grams administered via IV infusion over 1 hour every 3 weeks
- For lung carcinoma
Adult dosage: If previously they were treated with other medications, they can be prescribed 1.2 grams administered via IV infusion over 1 hour every 3 weeks. For the first treatment, 1.2 grams on the first day every 3 weeks via IV infusion over 1 hour, followed by additional chemotherapy.
Safety
Pregnancy:
Atezolizumab is classified as FDA Category N (the potential risk to the fetus is not yet clearly established). It is essential to consult with a doctor before using this medication to ensure appropriate monitoring during pregnancy.
Drug Interactions
Belimumabs
When they are taken together, atezolizumab and belimumab may interact, increasing the risk of side effects from belimumab. Thus, their concurrent use requires medical supervision to prevent potential adverse effects.
