Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) marked by chronic inflammation within the digestive tract, which can extend from the mouth all the way to the anus.

This condition can lead to serious complications, including intestinal tissue damage, blockages, malnutrition, bleeding within the intestinal walls, and even an increased risk of colon cancer. Recognizing the early signs and symptoms of Crohn's disease is essential for managing the condition effectively.

What is Crohn's Disease?

Crohn's disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), characterized by persistent inflammation in the digestive tract. This inflammation can impact both physical and mental health.

The inflammation associated with Crohn's disease can occur anywhere along the digestive tract, but it most commonly affects the small intestine and large intestine.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Crohn's Disease

The symptoms of Crohn's disease may develop gradually or emerge suddenly, and they can range from mild to severe, depending on the location and extent of the inflammation.

Below are some of the early signs and symptoms that may be experienced:

Abdominal Pain or Cramps

Pain related to Crohn’s disease typically occurs in the lower right side of the abdomen, although it may also be felt in other areas depending on which part of the intestines is affected. This pain often worsens after eating.

Chronic Diarrhea

Those with Crohn's disease frequently experience loose stools and frequent bowel movements that persist for weeks. This condition is often accompanied by an urgent need to go to the bathroom and difficulty controlling bowel movements.

Loss of Appetite and Weight Loss

The inflammation in the digestive tract caused by Crohn's disease can hinder the absorption of nutrients. As a result, the body may not receive adequate nutrients, leading to unintended weight loss.

Bleeding During Bowel Movements

The inflammation or injury in the intestines caused by Crohn's disease can result in bleeding during bowel movements. If left untreated, this bleeding can lead to anemia, a condition where the body lacks enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues.

Canker Sores

Inflammation due to Crohn’s disease isn't limited to the intestines—it can also affect the mouth, leading to the development of canker sores that cause pain when eating or speaking. Additionally, the inflammation can extend to the gums, leading to swelling and discomfort.

Fever and Fatigue

Systemic inflammation can lead to mild to high fever, and individuals with Crohn's disease often experience persistent fatigue, even after adequate rest.

Abscess or Infection in the Anal Canal

Some individuals with Crohn’s disease may develop an abscess, a pus-filled pocket, around the anus. This condition can be extremely painful and cause swelling, redness, and the discharge of pus or fluid from the anus.

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider immediately. An evaluation is needed if you have a persistent high fever, extreme fatigue, or a lump around the anus that discharges fluid.

You can also seek a consultation through the Ai Care app, which is available for download on both the App Store and Play Store.
