Benzydamine is a medication used to ease pain and reduce inflammation in the mouth and throat. It works by blocking the production of substances that trigger inflammation, which helps relieve discomfort and swelling in affected areas.

Indications

This medication is used for conditions involving inflammation in the mouth and throat (oropharyngeal area), including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, stomatitis, canker sores, and glossitis. It is also used after dental procedures like tooth extraction or tartar cleaning.

Contraindications

Benzydamine should not be used in individuals with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to the drug.

Side Effects

While side effects are uncommon, some people may experience burning or stinging sensation, numbness, allergic reactions, sore throat or irritation in the throat, nausea and vomiting.

Types

Benzydamine is available in several dosage forms:

• Mouthwash: 1.5 mg/mL; 7.5 mg/5 mL

• Lozenges: 3 mg

• Buccal spray: 1.5 mg/mL

Dosage

Mouthwash

Gargle with 15 mL, 2–3 times a day for one minute. Do not swallow the solution. Not advised for use beyond 7 days.

Lozenges

Adults: Slowly dissolve 1 lozenge in the mouth, 3 times per day (maximum of 12 lozenges daily) for up to 7 days

Children over 6 years old: Same dosage as adults

Spray Preparation

Adults: Use 4–8 sprays every 1.5 to 3 hours

Children:

• Children under 6 years old: 1 spray every 1.5 to 3 hours (up to 4 sprays daily), not exceeding 7 days of use

• Children aged 6–12 years old: 4 sprays every 1.5 to 3 hours, for a maximum of 7 days

• Children over 12 years old: Same dosage as adults, for no longer than 7 days

Pregnancy:

This medication is listed under FDA Category N, meaning its potential effects on the fetus are not well established. Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy for appropriate supervision.

Drug Interactions

Currently, there are no significant clinical reports on interactions between benzydamine and other drugs. However, you should consult your doctor if using this medication alongside other treatments for proper monitoring.
