For many people, sipping warm tea is a daily habit and part of their lifestyle. Beyond warming you up, a mug of warm tea can help the body unwind. You can also swap sugar for honey to enjoy honey’s natural benefits.

Why Honey Tea Is Beneficial

Honey is widely believed to offer several health benefits. Key components in honey include antioxidants, minerals such as magnesium and potassium, and a range of vitamins, such as vitamin A, C, B, E, and K. You can take honey on its own or pour and stir it into a cup of tea. Nutrition experts note that combining tea with honey doesn’t cancel out their properties and can actually support overall health.

Some of the benefits of drinking honey tea include:

1. Soothes Throat Discomfort

A study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that honey can help reduce mucus and phlegm in children. To ease a sore throat, mix honey into tea, warm water, or take it directly. Regularly consuming honey during throat irritation has been shown to lessen coughing in children and help them sleep more soundly.

In addition, honey tea can be useful for pregnant women that have throat discomfort in early pregnancy. Because medicines, including cold remedies, are generally avoided during pregnancy, honey tea may be used to calm the throat. If throat problems stem from flu-like symptoms, sipping honey tea can provide a soothing effect.

2. Improves Concentration

A paper in Medical Sciences reports that Tualang honey may help improve concentration and memory. Consuming honey has been linked to favorable changes in brain morphology and support for the brain’s cholinergic system. Honey may also help curb neuroinflammation, which supports brain health. Drinking honey tea when you need to concentrate can help you feel more relaxed and ready to study.

3. Relieves Menstrual Pain

Menstrual cramps can last for days and disrupt routines. To help ease the discomfort, you can drink honey tea, which is reported to relieve menstrual pain. Besides tea and honey, consider adding ginger to your drink.

4. Helps Treat Diarrhea

Honey is also thought to aid in managing diarrhea. Research published in the Kathmandu University Medical Journal found that honey can reduce the severity and duration of diarrhea. Honey may also increase potassium and water intake, which supports diarrhea care. Another study from Nigeria noted that honey’s antibacterial properties can relieve diarrhea caused by bacterial infection.

Pairing a cup of tea with honey may help as well; tea contains tannins that can reduce the water content of stools. However, avoid overdoing honey tea during diarrhea. Along with honey tea, increase fluids intake from water or oral rehydration solutions to prevent dehydration.
