For first-time mothers, the idea of labor can be intimidating. However, it does not have to feel overwhelming.
Fortunately, modern healthcare continues to explore ways to make this experience safer and more comfortable for women. Combining natural approaches of labor with technology can make the birthing process feels more secure and supportive for both mother and baby.
Hypnobirthing is a self-hypnosis and relaxation approach that prepares pregnant women physically, mentally, and spiritually for labor. It can be especially helpful for reducing fear and anxiety about the sensations that may arise during childbirth.
What do you learn in a hypnobirthing class?
- How to Control Your Breathing
Hypnobirthing teaches two breathing patterns: the first uses deep inhalation through the nose with exhalation through the nose. The second follows the same pattern with a different breath count.
- Focus on Positive Phrases
Instead of the term “contraction,” which can sound intimidating, you are encouraged to use words such as “surge” or “wave,” which can promote a more positive bodily response.
- Positive Visualization
Relaxation practice uses positive imagery, such as picturing beautiful flowers or other calming scenes to help your body relax. A relaxed state can lower pain and help manage stress through the release of endorphins.
According to the Mayo Clinic, hypnobirthing combines labor techniques with music or visualization and uses positive affirmations to help mothers stay relaxed and manage the sensations they feel during birth.
Hypnobirthing Method
According to Healthline, two common approaches are:
- Hypnobirthing
Also called the Mongan Method, this course includes five classes of about 2.5 hours each, for a total of 12 hours, taught by certified instructors. It emphasizes that severe pain is not inevitable if the body remains relaxed. Participants learn self-hypnosis, relaxation, and breathing skills.
- Hypnobabies
Another hypnosis-based program for childbirth developed by hypnotherapist Gerald Kein through “Painless Childbirth.”
While this method is similar to hypnobirthing, it differs by emphasizing pain management with straightforward relaxation, hypnotic repetition, and somnambulic hypnosis techniques. Classes typically include six sessions of three hours each, totaling 18 hours.
