Mechanism of Action

  1. Inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins (inflammatory mediators) in tissues.
  2. Decreases the formation and metabolism of substances that promote inflammation.

 

Indications

  1. Reduces fever.

  2. Provides analgesic (pain-relieving) effects.

  3. Acts as an anti-inflammatory agent for joint inflammation or rheumatic diseases.

 

Contraindications

  1. History of allergy or hypersensitivity to ibuprofen, aspirin, or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

  2. Patients with respiratory problems or asthma, or shortness of breath after taking ibuprofen, aspirin, or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

  3. Pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy.

  4. Use before coronary bypass surgery.

  5. Patients with a history of heart disease.

 

Side Effects

  1. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

  2. Mild allergic reactions such as skin redness and itchiness.

  3. Dizziness or headache.

  4. Impaired kidney function, especially with long-term use of ibuprofen.

 

Preparations

  1. 200 mg film-coated tablets.

  2. 400 mg film-coated tablets.

  3. 100 mg/5 mL syrup (1 measuring spoon: 5 mL).

  4. 200 mg/5 mL forte syrup (1 measuring spoon: 5 mL).

  5. 125 mg suppositories.

 

Dosage

  1. Adults: 200-400 mg, taken 3-4 times daily (maximum total dose: 1200 mg per day).

  2. Children: 4-10 mg/kg/day divided into 3-4 doses (maximum dose: 40 mg/kg/day).

  3. Infants: Not recommended for infants younger than 6 months old.

 

Safety of Drugs

First and second trimesters of pregnancy: Category C (animal studies have shown adverse effects, but there are no adequate controlled studies in pregnant women).

Third trimester: Category D (there is known risk to the fetus when used in pregnant women).

 

Drug Interactions

If possible, consider alternative treatments in the following combinations of ibuprofen and:

  • Aspirin (anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory): Decreases the anticoagulant effect of aspirin and increases aspirin-related side effects, particularly bleeding.

  • Captopril, lisinopril, ramipril (antihypertensive drugs): Reduces the effectiveness of these medications and increases the risk of kidney damage.

  • Methotrexate (immunosuppressant, chemotherapy agent): Increases and prolongs methotrexate blood levels, raising the risk of hematologic and gastrointestinal toxicity.
