How It Works
Calcipotriol is a synthetic vitamin D3 derivative. This drug works by slowing the overly rapid production of skin cells.
Indications
Calcipotriol is indicated for psoriasis vulgaris (a skin condition in which red, scaly patches form due to increased skin-cell turnover in certain areas of the body).
Contraindication

History of allergy to calcipotriol.

Hypercalcemia (calcium serum levels above the normal range).

Hypervitaminosis D (excess vitamin D levels in the blood).

Severe kidney or liver disorders.
Side Effects
- Burning, itching, rash, irritation, redness, dryness, or peeling at the application site may occur. If any of these reactions persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.
- Seek medical advice right away if you develop serious effects, including: thinning or discoloration of the skin, stretch marks (streaked lines that commonly appear on areas with more fat deposits such as the breasts, abdomen, thighs, and buttocks), folliculitis, unusual fatigue or mental changes, or constipation.
- Severe allergic reactions are rare. However, get immediate medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergy, including a rash, itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
Types
Calcipotriol is available as ointment and gel in 15 g and 30 g tubes, each containing 50 mcg of calcipotriol.
Dosage
- Adults: Apply a thin layer of the ointment or gel, rubbing gently and evenly over the affected skin, 1–2 times daily. Maximum dose: 100 g per week.
- Children: Apply a thin layer of ointment or gel, rubbing gently and evenly over the affected skin twice daily. Maximum weekly dose for children 6–12 years old: 50 g; for children over 12 years old: 75 g. Maximum duration of therapy: 8 weeks.
Safety
- This medicine may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid sun exposure when possible. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing outdoors. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop sunburn or blistering/redness. Ask your doctor for more details.
- In older adults, this drug can only be used with close supervision, as they may be more susceptible to its effects.
- During pregnancy, use only if it is needed. Discuss potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Drug Interactions
Using calcipotriol with topical salicylic acid may reduce the effect of calcipotriol.
