How It Works
Erenumab is a monoclonal antibody, a laboratory-made antibody that functions like the body’s natural immune proteins. It is designed to bind the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor on target cells.
CGRP contributes to migraine development. By occupying this receptor, the medicine prevents CGRP from attaching, which helps reduce migraine symptoms.
Indications
Erenumab is used to prevent migraine in adults who experience severe, throbbing headaches on one side of the head on at least four days each month. Note that this medicine is not intended to treat an ongoing migraine attack.
Contraindication
Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to any component of erenumab.
The removable needle cap of this product contains latex. Use caution if you are latex-allergic, as the cap may trigger an allergic reaction.
Side Effects
Side effects can occur, though not everyone will experience them. Reported effects include:
- Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site
- Constipation
- Muscle cramps
