How It Works
Bifonazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal diseases of the skin or nails. It works by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis (a key structural component of fungal cell membranes), which leads to abnormalities in fungal cell shape and function and ultimately causes the cells to become damaged and die.
Indications
Medical conditions such as fungal infections affecting the skin or the nails.
Contraindication
A previous history of hypersensitivity or allergy to bifonazole.
Side Effects
Side effects are generally uncommon. However, some reactions may occur, such as:

Blistering

Types
Available preparations of bifonazole in the market include:
- 1% cream presented in 5 g and 15 g tubes.
Dosage
Purpose: to treat fungal skin infections
Adults dosage: apply a thin layer of 1% cream to the affected skin with fungal infections once daily, preferably at night, for 2–4 weeks.
Purpose: to treat fungal nail infections
Adults dosage: apply a thin layer of 1% cream once daily, preferably at night, for 2–4 weeks or longer; prior application of 40% urea paste is used to soften the nail.
Safety
Pregnancy:
Bifonazole is classified as FDA Category N (risk to the fetus has not been clearly established). Therefore, consult a doctor before use for monitoring.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Concomitant use of bifonazole with warfarin may increase bleeding risk, reflected by a rise in the international normalized ratio (INR) of the prothrombin time on laboratory testing. Because of this potential interaction, combined use requires medical supervision to prevent adverse events.
