How It Works
Pipemidic acid is a quinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria responsible for infections. It is specifically used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Indications
Pipemidic acid is used to treat urinary tract infections caused by both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. A UTI is an infection that affects one or more organs in the urinary tract, which includes the kidneys, ureters (the tubes that connect the kidneys and bladder), bladder, and urethra (the tube that carries urine).
Contraindications
This medication should not be used by individuals who:

Types
Pipemidic acid is available in the forms of 400 mg caplets, tablets, and capsules.
Dosage
Pipemidic acid is typically taken twice daily, every 12 hours. The treatment should be continued for at least 10 days to prevent re-infection.
Safety
There are no studies available on the safety and effects of this medication on pregnant women and fetuses. It is also unknown whether pipemidic acid is excreted in breast milk. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to breastfeed.
Drug Interactions
Increased drug effects
If pipemidic acid is taken alongside acarbose (a medication used in diabetes treatment), it may increase the effects of acarbose.
Decreased drug levels
Taking pipemidic acid with acetaminophen (used for pain and fever relief) may reduce the absorption of acetaminophen. This can cause a decrease of its effectiveness.
Worsening heart rhythm disorders
Combining pipemidic acid with adenosine may increase the risk or severity of QT interval prolongation, a heart disorder that can cause irregular heartbeats, fainting, or even sudden death.
