How It Works
Cefprozil is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by preventing the growth of bacteria that cause infections.
Indications
Cefprozil is used to treat various infections caused by bacteria, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, ear infections, and tonsil infections.
Contraindications
Cefprozil should not be used by individuals with a history of allergy to cefprozil or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
Side Effects
-
Some people may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, or dizziness. If these symptoms persist or worsen, it's important to inform your doctor right away.
-
If you experience any severe side effects, such as persistent nausea or vomiting, unusual tiredness or weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, stomach pain, dark urine, signs of kidney issues (such as changes in urine volume), symptoms of infection (such as persistent sore throat or fever), easy bruising, or changes in mood (such as confusion), tell your doctor immediately.
-
Cefprozil may also cause severe intestinal irritation due to a bacteria called Clostridium difficile. This condition can occur during treatment or even weeks to months after stopping the medication. Seek medical advice if you experience persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or blood or mucus in your stool.
-
Prolonged or repeated use of cefprozil may lead to oral or genital yeast infections. If you notice white patches in your mouth or unusual vaginal discharge, or if you experience other symptoms of a yeast infection, consult your doctor.
Types
Cefprozil is available in 500 mg caplets and as a dry syrup with a concentration of 125 mg per 5 ml.
Dosage
-
Adults: The typical dose is 500 mg per day, either as a single dose or in two divided doses. The dosage can be increased to 500 mg twice daily if necessary. Treatment duration is usually 10 days.
-
Children aged 6 months to 2 years: For otitis media (middle ear infection), the dosage is 15 mg/kg every 12 hours. For acute sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses), it is 7.5 mg/kg or 15 mg/kg every 12 hours. For pharyngitis (throat inflammation) or tonsillitis (tonsil inflammation), the dosage is 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hours. For skin infections in children over 2 years old, the dosage is 20 mg/kg per day. The maximum daily dose is 1 gram.
Safety
-
Cefprozil may cause dizziness. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you are sure that you can perform these activities safely.
-
This medication may reduce the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines, such as the typhoid vaccine. Inform your healthcare provider that you are taking cefprozil before getting any immunizations.
-
Older patients may be more sensitive to the side effects of cefprozil and require closer monitoring during treatment. Similarly, children may be more prone to side effects, especially skin rashes, and should also be monitored more closely.
-
Cefprozil should be used during pregnancy only if it is clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
-
Cefprozil is excreted in breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medication.
